Going in for my FUT hair transplant surgery tomorrow morning. AMA...

EDIT: Before and After pics on page 4.

I’ve been saving up for this for years. Was gonna go with the FUE “Scarless” method but the more I studied, the more I realized that the FUT “strip method” is the gold standard of hair transplants. You can harvest way more grafts than FUE and their survival rate is much higher. So that’s quantity + quality but you gotta pay the piper and accept that you’ll have a permanent scar in the back of your head that can be concealed.

I realized that a lot of hair transplant clinics and doctors are pushing the FUE method because it takes less people to do it than FUT. And they probably profit off it more. The FUT strip method is NOT outdated, despite what everyone says about FUE being the newer/better method.

I’m at a Norwood 4 with a big bald spot on the crown with a frontal hairline that’s not too terrible. Getting about 3000-3500 grafts done for about $14,000. Was gonna do the trip to Turkey to get it done for a third of the price but that’s rolling the dice. My doctor has 30 years experience in the field so I’ll be in good hands.

Getting PRP “platelet rich plasma” injections to further grow the follicles. I won’t touch that propecia/finasteride **** with a ten foot pole so I’m basically doing everything except that. Transplant, PRP, Low Level Laser Therapy Cap, and Minoxidil/Rogaine. If I need another transplant, I’ll have more donor hair left by having the first surgery being FUT instead of FUE.

Probably won’t see the full results until a year later but I’m getting excited for it. People often say “Just man up and shave your head.” I say “Bullsh!t, man up and go work overtime and get it fixed and look the way you wanna look.” But that’s just me.

I hope anyone else looking into getting a hair transplant doesn’t fall into the trap I almost did and go with FUE before really knowing the facts. It definitely has its positives but it’s more for people who need less than 2000-2500 grafts. Anything beyond that and you’re gonna see tons of small dot scars in the back, and have less options if you need another transplant.

Will rep everyone in this thread and update with pics on a monthly basis. Forgot how to upload pics on here through imgur but if I can figure it out I’ll get them up.

Best wishes bro.

I had an FUT procedure as well back in Nov 2012. And yes, FUT is still the gold standard. Many guys make the mistake of going for FUE for their first transplant but FUE has a tendency to overly damage the donor hair area because of transection of neighboring hairs during the extraction process.

It's a great time to do it since we're all under lockdown.

Back when I had it done, I had to go back to work the following week and tried as best I could to cover up the transplanted hairs. It was kinda embarrassing.

If you're bald af at an earlier age then I think you have to go the FUT route but if youre in your 30s with a slow receded hairline I think you can get away with FUE. If you're not on fin though this makes it hard has you're gonna have to keep going back the more your balding progresses.

Hope it works out bruh. Not sure how you're gonna preserve what you already have without fin though. I wouldn't recommend fin either, but you should look into a topical androgen receptor blocker such as RU58841 or Fluridil (Eucapil).

youre not worried about the massive visible scar that 3k grafts on FUT strip will leave behind? subbing bro - interested in your overall experience with this and how it goes

also any pics of your current hairline? no point in being insecure about it anymore since youre getting it fixed

I work the night shift as a security guard so nobody is gonna see it. Been with this company for 5 years and have my bachelors in criminology. Got complacent after my dad passed but I gotta move on next year. Glad you got FUT over FUE as well. You weren’t fooled.

You’re 100% right. I’m 31 so if I can get a good 5-8 years outta this before possibly needing another transplant, I’m cool with it.

Yea I’m gonna be starting TRT as well. Already got it in the mail just waiting on syringes. Test levels were in the mid 400’s range and the “wink-wink” doctor said “Yea let’s raise that up to 1100” so I said fuk yea I’m in. Might freeze my sperm just in case. I think 5 years of night shifts and 2 bicycle rides from a decade ago are catching up to me. I’d imagine my DHT levels will go up so I’ll try to lower them by other means than finasteride.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about it. But there are numerous ways to conceal the scar. I can buzz my hair with a #3 buzzer and likely have it concealed by my good hair. Or there’s SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation) or basically tattoo’d dots that look like hair. I have the Toppik hair building fibers I’ve been using to cover up the crown of my head. Plus I also have this brown spray that does pretty much the same thing as the Toppik fibers. Or you can get an FUE procedure to cover up the scar. Any way you slice it (no pun intended), it’s better than how my hair looks now or when I shaved my head to see what I’d look like bald.

I am seriously debating going to hair medical restoration in Mexico this summer for an FUE. They quoted me $3 CAD per graft and ~1600 grafts. The Cortez brother have done some top quality work, there's a bunch of people on youtube documenting their results. I think I'll need a little more than 1600 though probably closer to ~2000. Still though I would like the option to keep a fade on the sides/back so I think FUE is better for me. I've been using topical finasteride/minoxidil (Morr-F) for the past year and I honestly don't know if it's doing ****. Feels like my hair keeps getting chittier.

imagine being so insecure about your hair you would save up for years to drop 15k on some hair transplants lol good lord

ill go spend $5 on a blade and shave my head and spend the other 14995$ on other things.

I cant believe people actually take the misc so seriously about "its all about the hair" they would actually do this.

Google what George Clooney would look like bald next to a picture of him with a full head of hair.

I wouldn’t be a douche and say I was a “Chad” back in my early twenties but I did pretty damn good for myself in college and afterwards. And I never give myself credit for anything really. All I want to do is go back to looking like that.

Girls can pile on the makeup to look like they’re something THEY’RE NOT all the time and nobody says sh!t. But if a guy wants to look exactly how he looked in his early twenties NATURALLY, that’s somehow frowned upon?

And it’s not just about wanting to look good for girls. Most normal people wanna look good for themselves. It’s not always to attract a mate. You just simply wanna look good and like what you see in the mirror. I have the money. I can afford it. So I’m doing it.

He said 80% of his patients are on Finasteride but I never budged even a little on it. He didn’t try too hard to push it on me. Just told me what I already knew about possibly losing hair behind the transplanted grafts. That’s why I’m adding PRP, LLLT, and Minoxidil to the mix.

I read about Finasteride for years and there is NO WAY the stats are as low as they keep saying they are. They claim like 1-2% of men, maybe 5% tops will get the side effects. Yet almost everyone I know who has taken it says to avoid it like the plague. So I am.

im balding and thinning like a MFer , I find ways around it until its bad enough ill just shave the whole thing off. But at no point unless i made CEO 10k/day money would I drop thousands on hair transplants.

Thinking hair is the reason you cant attract women is a cope and a crutch for other reasons you probably arent attracting women.

Bosley in New York City. Very reputable clinic/company and my doctor is top notch.

I live on Long Island so it’s about an hour drive. Should be there all day pretty much.

the 1-2 % getting side effects are only the ones that report it. Most people that get adverse effects stop taking it, so realistically its a lot higher but we'll never know the true stats

Good luck. Also yoU checked your surgeons past results for similar cases right?
Yea this is him.https://www.bosley.com/hair-transpla.../mark-faucher/

I did more further research on his reviews and they were all mostly good. Way better than most of the ones in Turkey if I wanted to go the cheap route.

But from my research, the technicians will determine the outcome possibly more so than the lead doctor/surgeon. The doctor for FUT does the scalp cutting and sutures while 6-8 technicians each prep 400-600 grafts under a microscope. FUT requires a bigger team than FUE.
