yeah that would be tough for $12, $25 isn't out of the question

chicken offcuts you can sometimes get for <$1/lb from like northgate/sprouts/fraziers, ground beef $3/lb on a good day, dunno about the cheese cause i don't eat it, but i imagine it's the most expensive thing there, veggies $1-2, mayo $2, foil $5

cant wait for them to restock the frozen meat section and the wings and mince will get that to sub around 5-6 GBP standard price for everything.

If I eat near expiry and freeze asap once back home I can push it to 4 GBP.

Bear in mind this is Lidl's stuff and it's not high quality.

Also, i had no idea 25% fat beef existed.

I'm shocked at how cheap all that is.

Either it's poor quality/mass produced garbage, or I'm paying way too much

can you elaborate why it would be low quality? I dont find a difference between Sainsbury and Lidl dead serious

the UK food regulators regulate it equally - you cant sell sewage rat meat and get away with it

I have heard too many stories from production employees "After hour X we change the labels and continue with the same".

25% is a new thing from last week.

Well for example let's take the beef - It is 25% to start with, i didn't even realise you could get such high fat beef, more fat the cheaper it is. Every time i ever buy cheap minced beef, even the 5% stuff it's full of meat stones, recently cracked a tooth due to one.

To be honest all the supermarkets bar M&S and Waitrose sell sub standard food. Beef from a grass fed cow free to roam certainly does taste a lot better than beef from a hormone filled cow who lived a miserable life squished in a warehouse.

Don't get me wrong, i do shop at Lidl's but things like meat i get from Tescos as the quality is definitely better, but still not great. Wish i could afford to pay like £5 for 500g of m&s beef.

Go to Waitrose in the evening, or especially Sunday afternoon, and get all the Duchy organic stuff you can reduced. That's what I try to do, it means you end up eating different things too instead of boring chicken and ground beef all the time. I suspect the cheap Aldi and Lidl meat is chit quality but tbh it might not be, I'm not sure. I think the Duchy mince is usually 3 for £10 anyway, and I think it's worth spending a little extra on the best quality meat. Alternatively go to a farm shop and buy a big piece of meat to portion over a few days, that way you get better value.

you are right its 25 % fat, but fat is good for you and adds taste so don't have to oil pans. minced beef can have some **** on it; one time I bought waitrose chicken wings and they were half-assedly defeathered; we can go all day like this

what I told you though is a fact - subpar quality comes mainly from if one producer is not really following the rules but regulators do not allow sick kettle and a limit of pharma pills

see the blog post I showed you - they have significantly lower product selection, limited brands to 1-2 (which are their own) and thus overhead costs are heavily reduced; they have a similar operational model to Trader Joe's in the USA.

Lidl and Aldi are the two most popular german supermarkets. So the country that sets a ****ton of standards in Europe for electric devices, cars, cosmetics lets its people eat **** food.

I think the issue lies in what different people consider 'chit food'. For example, a chicken or cow kept inside and fed exclusively corn or soy could still be considered good quality if the standards for bedding, space, quantity of food, medicine etc are met. However a chicken or cow which is allowed outside and eats bugs or grass respectively will actually be a much better quality of meat. The Waitrose beef is all labelled 'grass and forage fed' but tbh I don't know to what extent this is just a marketing ploy or if it's actually significantly different to other supermarkets. Even when I shop at Aldi I will still only buy the 'free range' or 'outdoor bred' varieties of meat. I don't think food is something worth cheaping out on, I'd rather spend less on frivolities or not go out as much.

Lidl/Sainsbury the only shops I buy food from srs. Also, you can't really get good alcohol in Lidl, so Sainsbury is the best for that as they offer a lot of discounts. Plus noticed lately Sainsbury has lowered price on meat like beef which is pretty nice as well.

Tesco is overpriced for what it is. If I wanted those prices, I'd rather shop in M&S but sadly don't have it in my city.

I see your point but I really do not see evidence describing the difference for both enjoyment wise (taste) and health/nutrition wise. Like you said, how much it is marketing and now.

And I agree with you, shouldn't cheap out on food - but I am not buying meat from some unregistered food compartment with dodgy butchers with meat coming form God knows where, I am doing it in a licensed and trusted supermarket chain.

You cracked a tooth due to your UK genetics. If you've ever eaten "mince" at a restaurant, whether it was a burger or some other dish, it was at least 70/30. For restaurants, higher fat content equals better taste and happier customers.

While grass fed/finished animals are probably healthier, they most certainly do not taste better. Every chef I've seen speak on the topic says they wouldn't serve it in a restaurant because it doesn't taste as good.
