Any of you boyos ivy league? What does it take to get in? My son is doing dual enrollment high school and college at the same time, has a 4.0 gpa for both. I've got family that could do a letter of recommendation to yale or stanford. What else would be needed?

Ivy League checking in. I went to Cornell. First off, Congrats on your son doing extremely well! You must be extremely proud.



Ok, off the top of my head:

-Top 5% of HS class

-Off the charts SAT score. Pretty much want to score over 700 in each section. Not sure what year your son is, but you might want to have him take timed practice tests so you can assess where he is on it. We had an SAT class that our HS offered that almost everyone took and it was a good primer. I never took one, but I remember other kids also paid to take Kaplan SAT prep classes.

-Taking the PSAT (junior year) and scoring well on it can trigger automatic applications being sent to your house from the Ivy League. I had apps unexpectedly show up in the mail when I never requested them. Phone calls too. Also puts you in contention for a National Merit Scholarship.

-At least a 31 or 32 on the ACT. I think SAT is more important, but doing well on ACT can't hurt either.

-Take every AP class he can in HS and take the AP exams at the end of the year, and score a 4 or 5 on those exams.

-Varsity Sports are key. If he doesn't play a sport, definitely be involved in other extracurricular activities. Having both are ideal, though.

-Extracurricular Activities like Debate Team, Math Team, Science Fair, Music, HS radio station if they have it, etc. Doesn't have to be all of them, but being involved in a couple activities is helpful.

-Volunteer work also helps a lot. Being involved in the community is important.

-Working a part-time job is also a good look, like summers and weekends when possible.

-College classes are awesome. I did a summer at UCLA and I know it helped immensely, so your son is definitely in the right direction with that. If you don't mind me asking, how many credits is he carrying while still in HS?

-I got my recommendations from my HS Counselor as well as teachers who knew me the best. It was strategic though, you want it to be AP teachers if possible and pick the ones you have the best relationship with who you know will write you a good letter. His college professors would also be a really good option. Is your family that could write a letter a legacy of the University? Because, tbh, I'm not sure if too many people used family members to write letters. I don't really remember people doing that. I know my friends that went to West Point and Naval Academy at Annapolis needed a letter from a Senator or Congressman too. But other than that, I think most people submitted letters from teachers. Building a good relationship with his HS counselor is also also a good idea, at least it was back in the day.

-Really well-written essays on the application are important too. Not sure what your son wants to major in, but if he does know, it is important to convey why he has the interest in that subject matter that he does.

-Also Awards for best in your grade for each class. At the end of the year, taking home a handful of awards never hurts.

-Basically, they want really well-rounded students. Anything else outside of school that your son is exceptional in is always worth sharing in the application.

-Pretty much just read and research a lot too. Back in the day when I applied, most people didn't have the internet yet (we never had a computer while I was in HS), so my dad took me to the book store and we bought huge books from Barron's and Princeton Review that had write-ups on every college in the country. Nowadays I'm sure they have tons of forums for kids trying to get into Ivy League schools.

-I also visited a few schools senior year to see which school I liked the best. Also make sure to schedule an interview too when applying. That is very important. You want to either interview at the school when you visit for a tour, or your son can interview locally with the alumni network. Some alumni came to my house, others I had to go to their house to interview.

TY Sir. He's only a sophomore but he's doing about 8 credit hours on top of school so I haven't pushed him to get a job, sports etc. It's a lot of work for him. I think next semester the high school is going to let him cut out some of his classes since he's doing more advanced classes at the college anyway. We'll see what happens for jr and senior year with all of that. Honestly thought about signing him up to volunteer for the DNC since I'm sure they'd love to see that. Thanks again for the info.

And yea, DNC is very good idea. Lol. I would imagine these days that taking up social justice causes and volunteering for things like climate change causes would be most beneficial. Never would have thought anything of the sorts back in my day.

Ahh, yea I incorrectly asked you if they were legacy. I should have asked if they were alumni, I got it backwards. But that is what I was trying to get at. Your son would be the legacy when the parent or other family member attended. Yea in that case, the letter from them helps.

Merry Christmas folks. This is my favorite time of the year. Turkey is nice and all, but i have Raclette (one of the GOAT food) as a personal tradition.

Raclette is a type of cheese. The dish is basically all about the experience than just the food. There are many variations.

Basically, you need a Raclette machine. There are many peasant types of machines, but you want to avoid being a peasant and make sure you get one with a stone top.

My favorite way to eat Raclette:
- bake baby potatoes and cut them down the middle like a jacket potato. Put them in basket on the table
- thinly sliced filet. Has to be thin. Put them in a basket on the table
- cut a fresh baguette up and put it in a basket on the table
- Raclette cheese

Put the cheese on the plate that goes under the stone top, over the fire. It melts beautifully
Put the steak on the stone top. Let it cook for about 45 seconds. Somewhere between medium rare and rare.
Remove the cheese and put it on the baked baby potato and eat with the steak. You can replace the potato with a piece of baguette every other piece of steak

You want to make sure that the meat is not just thinly sliced, but portioned quite small as well. It's an experience and you should be essentially be "cooking" over and over, averaging like 6-7 slices of meat per person at least.

Try it. Srs. You Texans have a legendary carnivorous reputation, so this dish should work for you.
