Technically yeah Vai is better, Zappa hired Vai to mock Van Halen and the rest of the shredders. Van Halen pioneered the worst genre ever, hair metal. His music was dogchit for the most part

My boomer dad wanted to go hang out with his boomer friends last year, so they went to a free concert their small town was hosting. City of like 40K, sketch downtown area they were trying to revitalize. Anyway, some country band's on a stage playing for probably 200 people. No one's really paying attention to them, there's a beer tent and a local BBQ trailer that were getting all the love. They're just this indie-countryish background noise.
I looked up the band name. The bandleader on stage was the 2008 world country-guitar champion, and he was playing for beer money in bumfuk nowhere.
For any guitar wanker you want to name, I guarantee you I can find a guy in a conservatory, Youtube band, or studio who can wank 10x harder than them. As a poorly-skilled musician, I definitely enjoy listening to brahs who know what they're doing, but the "who's the most talented guy" argument is stupid af, cause there are so many more beyond-gifted musicians you will never hear of.
