How long do you keep a laptop?

Had my Acer F15 for over 4 years now

WiFi and Bluetooth aren't working consistently and only have a 100g SSD

New laptop time or should I join the PC master race and build something?

I’ve had my msi gaming laptop for like 5-6 years. Mostly collects dust.

Have a MacBook Air that I bought in 2017. Still going strong and use it almost daily. Runs Literally like the day I got it.




If you don’t have a PC though, definitely build one. A laptop can never replace a desktop for any significant usage.

I’ve had my personal MacBook Pro for probably seven years. No problems with performance whatsoever. I’ve had my work MBP for probably 3 years. Same story.

I have had a Mac book Pro for 5 years + now. I actually bought it used with a new Solid State drive installed. Hasn't missed a beat. Go MBP. worth every Penny. last waayyy longer then any other in comparison. My home boy had one last like ten years.

My lenovo Chromebook is excellent with like 15+ hours battery for $200 but sucks not being able to run full versions of programs.

have a thinkpad from 2015 and its starting to get old as it cant manage all he programs I have open

thinking of upgrading to a newer thinkpad but alot of them dont come with SD card slots which I use frequently to edit photos and the one that do are expensive and come with alot of feature I don't need

so im currently waiting until they release a thinkpad with integrated gpu and SD card slot

i still daily a 15" macbook pro from 2009, running macos catalina and win 10

never would have expected it to run this long back when i bought it but i dont really need much from it atm either - if i needed to do real computer stuff id prob want to upgrade pretty quick

Honestly mobile technology is so powerful now there is no reason for a desktop unless you fall into one of these categories:

Like immersive AAA gaming with a huge ass 4K screen and sound system.
Are some kind of developer and/or content creator that needs a lot of parallel processing power and a robust user interface.

I am finding that for most people a good fit is a solid laptop and if needed a USB C/Thunderbolt dock that connects to a monitor and speakers or whatever else you use in a typical desktop scenario.

To answer the question though I get about 2 years out of a laptop before I upgrade.

I am waiting for the Ryzen 3 based laptops to come out next year and then I might upgrade.

For the time being I am actually using a NUC9i9QNX connected to 2 17 inch portable monitors with portable speakers. I specked everything out so I can fit the entire setup in a carry on and it is powered by a single power cord. Both of the monitors are powered and driven via USB C and everything else is powered via USB A. For now, this is my mobile workstation. I am away for 6 weeks right now and the user experience on this thing has been great.
Eat in a deficit to lose weight.
Hit your protein and fat minimums to stay healthy and keep your gainz.
Lift heavy and do HIIT to look and feel awesome.
Use the internet to learn why you should do these things and how to do these things.

I've been using the laptop pretty much as a desktop - external 32" monitor, all of my flight sim equipment hooked up to it (limited to FSX steam edition), SSD has meant that general browsing, office work bs has been fine but everything else is starting to slip.

Lately I can't play YT video with res over 480, bluetooth only works on some days and wifi drops out multiple times per hour (tested against 7 other devices, wifi not the problem).

Put in an order for a cheap build, if I can play x-plane and FS2020 at 1080p (which is what the reviews seem to be able to do) then I think we're sweet - able to swap out different components (wifi, bluetooth adapters, storage) if I need to.

Ryzen 3, R580 on sale, 500g m.2, 16g ram etc

My 11.5” Lenovo laptop is a little pile of doodoo. It only lasted about two years and now it won’t even charge or turn on!
I’m just glad it lasted long enough to get my teenager through end of last school year.

We just got her a 14” HP Chromebook with touch screen. I’m hoping she gets at least 4 years out of it.

Had my MacBook since 2012. Upgraded hard drive and ram last year for under $300. Runs awesome and expect to get another 3 years out of it at least

Get a MacBook Pro

Edit: Outlook and other office software isn’t as good on Mac, especially if do a lot of VBA. It’s been a learning curve for me.

Have a 2012 MacBook Air and this bad boy is running just fine 8 years later. Mostly use it for browsing the web and goofing off etc. I would like to get another Mac but I don’t really see a reason to upgrade now.

Back in the master race

Build took over an hour, first build since 2009 and forgot how much front IO and button swithces and lining up MB to the standoffs with those little piece of **** screws were a pain to put in.Thermaltake H330 was easy as **** to work with, I've had cases that would fight me and cut me at every opportunity.

Not getting a modular PS made cable management slightly more of a pain in the ass.

I don't have any benchmarks but X-Plane 11 and FS2020 both run on high/1080p with the Ryzen 3200G, 16gb of ram and RX580.

I was worried about getting a USB or PCI-e wifi adapter- but USB high gain unit from TP-Link averaged 6.7MB/s on a 58 mbit connection for over 200gb in downloads with zero dropouts.

This. 2013 15" macbook pro still going strong. Will upgrade to the newest macbook model once this one finally dies.

The new M1 chips look incredible, god damn the cost of a MB though.

Total build cost for PC was $750 including tax, already had 32" curved display, mechanical KB.

Only time I use a laptop as a laptop is the chromebook that I take to school which is just for office stuff anyway and have zero issue with damaging it.

Still using a AST Advanage NB 486/33 from 1994 and HP 100LX Palmtop from 1993 for everything except internet. Internet is pretty much andriod these days.

I like MS DOS better for writing, appointments, database and spreadsheets than running newer hardware and having to upgrade every few years and it's always stable.
I like the old DOS Code Page-437 text font, colored letters on a black background. I find it less tiring on my eyes than a white screen.
