Poverty weights

What does the misc think of my poverty weight (50 lb)?

Been looking for Olympic weights online (OfferUp, Craigslist, etc) and have came across some sweet deals. Found nearly 600 lbs on Craigslist for just under $300. Was gone in a matter of minutes. Seeing as how my chances of finding a deal are slim to none, I looked on YouTube for ideas.

There’s a lot of videos on making these online and honestly wasn’t that hard. These should hold me over till the price gouging stops or everyone starts selling their home equipment for pennies on the dollar. Each concrete 50 lb weight will cost about $3 to make. Probably worth 20x that right now.

Will plasti dip or epoxy it once cured. Doesn’t have to be pretty...just has to be heavy.

Both are about $40 bucks a container. The epoxy seal would go pretty far. Probably could do several weights. Not sure how far Plasti dip goes. May only do 1-2 big weights per $40 container (22 oz). I guess they’re not necessary...but I’m gonna experiment.

Well any thin coating will be completely useless. Concrete is brittle and pieces on the thin edge will crumble off. (and take the coated pieces with it)
So if you do want to coat it, the coating needs to be solid. I think epoxy might be able to do that, but that stuff is pretty expensive.
You'll need to cover the entire plate with it. You'll also need a slightly bigger mould of whatever you made the weight in, to cover it in epoxy, unless you want to craft something.

Do post a picture once covered though, i look forward to it.

Thanks man, will do. This video gave me the idea for epoxy.

Definitely would apply it differently but like you said, probably too thin of a coating to make much of a difference. I used high strength concrete (5000) but probably should’ve used crack resistant...

I saw that video but all it does is make it look shiny. you'll need a complete solid coating. A coating that on its own is strong enough to withstand the weight.
So far i haven't came up with a solution.
The only thing i know that will prevent crumbling, is by grinding off the thin edge. Either by hand, or with a concrete cutting tool like a handheld circular saw.

Concrete doesn't crack easily. But the edge will fall apart for sure.

We need whatever this is:

Is this the same stuff bed liners are made of (GLS polyurea)?

That stuff looks amazing. But considering that a tiny spray can of liquid rubber (the thin cheap chit) is already expensive and can maybe cover 2 plates max for $15-20.
i don't want to know how expensive the stuff is they're spraying on there.
Looks like legit professional quality.

edit: needs to be heated and sprayed. Requiring professional machinery. You'd be cheaper off buying real weights.
