Lately i 've been thinking that human beings dont really have a choice about anything

Anybody else ever has thoughts like this? I was just thinking about the Lana Rhodes thread, and it brought back those thoughts of how little control we have over our lives. Let me explain:

I feel like every single one of us has a path set in stone, a single line of fate that we would follow exactly the same even if we could live our lives a hundred times, we would always take the same way when we encounter a crossroad.

This way of thinking is turning me into a person that cant judge others, nor praise others. For example:

- A millionaire that built his empire from the ground up and has a perfect traditional happy family

- A homeless dude asking for money on the street

To me they are the same, and i would treat both of them exactly the same. One of them isnt worth more than the other IMO. Why? Because they both are a result of their nature and their nurture. If the millionaire had been born on the exact same shoes as the homeless dude and with his same exact brain/personality/body, he would have lived the same exact life. Same for the other way around. I know i sound like im high but im not.

When i see a school janitor, i wonder if he could have been more if he had been born in a wealthy family and if he had been given a good education. When a person commits murder, i think that they never had a choice, a combination of all the experiences they lived trough their lives plus the physical body that they were born with (including the brain) its what ultimately got them to make that choice. So yeah they should be put in prison, but not judged harshly, murderers didnt make the choice before being born of living the life of a person that would eventually become a murderer.

If a person decides to lose 100 pounds and change their lives, they were always going to make that choice. It really isnt something they had control of, something happened and they lived all the experiences on their lives necessary and they were born with a brain and personality necessary in order to make that choice.

-Every miscer would have been a porn star sloot had they been born on the same exact shoes as Lana Rhodes

Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

OP, you might be interested in Nietzsche’s ideas of the Great Recurrence. It’s very similar to your line of thought.

Personally, I disagree with it, but that’s for another thread (actually already talked about it another thread on Nietzsche).

Yeah i realize that, if you put David Goggings mind and consciousness inside a fat person's head, that person is going to lose weight and become a hard worker. I realize that.

But what im talking about its that we really have no control about our own lives, im not talking about every mind being the same, im talking about how every single choice we have made and will ever make are decided before we even make them. Decided by both nurture and nature. Decided by the brain we were born with plus the experiences that we went trough.

I dont know if im explaining myself well here.

Yeah, will look into that. I assume many philosophers from the past flirted with the same toughts. Why do you disagree ?

Yeah exactly. A person is a hardworker not because they chose to, but because every single experience they lived plus the body and brain they were born with took them trough that exact path. They never made that choice

A man is a p3dophile not because he is evil and decided to make his life difficult and ****ty, its because he lived trough a particular combination of experiences that made him one, on top of that he was born with a brain/personality that allowed said experiences to turn him into one.

just sounds like excuses to justify failures. realistically, since we have freedom a lot of people simply wont make it and this is just justifying their failures and also cementing the position of the elite.

Yeah if you really think about it, anyone in right circumstances could become a murderer for instance, and probably even enjoy killing/torture. But most don't want to think that deep because it's too uncomfortable.

Disagree. For some people there is no climbing out like OP stated or they don’t have the mental capacity or resources to do it (mentally ill for ex).

Some people are born mentally ill and some people are born into circumstances that slowly erode their mental health.

Some people are born with a strong , supportive family and others aren’t.

Either way they got the short straw in life.

I’m starting to realize this the older I get. Almost everything you do in life is pointless and some people really are better off dead or should have been aborted , me included.

Sometimes my life feels like a huge matrix glitch. Shouldn’t have made it this far.

Should’ve been dead by now imo. I can’t image I’d be alive or not severely mangled from my recent accident if I wasnt driving my “piece of ****” super duty .

The tow truck driver and officer even said if I had been driving a car , it probably would’ve rolled due to the nature of where I was hit and that the speed limit on that major road was 55.

They’ve seen it happen in plenty of tbone collisions.

There’s things in life you can control and things you can’t. People need to stop with the bootstrap bull**** , it’s not a one size fits all.

100% srs.

You are getting into a tricky subject (development of personality), but you cant say that for sure because identical twins dont go trough identical experiences, nor is every identical twin 100% identical. From the instant they are being taken out of the womb, their life experiences are different. They are different from the instant they are given a different name.

But i appreciate your argument, its very intersting.

At the end of the day, if twin A re-lives his life an infinite amount of times, he makes the same exact choices every single time. Same for Twin B, at least thats what i think.

Yeah, exactly what i mean. Its depressing to think about this sort of stuff and you can even be called crazy for discussing this topic, but i believe it to be the truth and a very interesting topic too.

Just look below im already being called a murderer justifier.

You think p3dos decide one day to just be p3dos? We are thinking at a deeper level here

Looks like you stumbled into free will, a concept which most big brains on the planet now dismiss.

We are only a combination of genetics and experiences. That's it. There is no omniscient third person making decisions for you outside of your biology. Free will is not a real thing.

Easy to say this, but if I had a wife or kid that someone murdered, or a close family member - that person better pray to never meet me. Srs

Yeah, for sure. Luck is another factor that comes into play.

I consider myself a happy person with a good future ahead of me (if God allows it), but just a few years ago i was in some deep **** that honestly i was extremely lucky to walk out from with really no significant consequences.

Dont want to get to deep into it but i made several coin tosses and i won them all. Had i loss one of them my life would be extremely different now, God knows where would i be or how would i have handled that. Thankfully we will never know.

I agreed up to the part where you said they’d be the same if switched environments

That’s where you lost me

I do think we were all programmed at a biological level to make the choices we have dependent on the experiences we’ve encountered to this point.

In that sense, if you were to start your life all over from Day 1, you’d make the exact same choices every time. The choice you make is the one you assume is the best course of action for you in that moment you make it.

So if you started back in Day 1 (and wiped your knowledge) you’d make all the same mistakes and decisions

In that sense, you’re already predetermined to make these choices. It’s ingrained in who you are and your future choices are no different. It’s a sum of your experiences to that point in time combined with your biological predisposition

Now if you switch environments, say take someone poor and have them be born wealthy, well that changes things. The biological predisposition remains the same but the environment has changed. Their still destined to make certain choices based off who they are but now the choices will be influenced differently because the environment has changed and the sum of experiences will ultimately differ

Thus, you could end up with a wildly different person/life.

All in all, I agree you don’treallymake choices at all though.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Dont get me wrong, im not saying those people shouldnt be punished by justice. Im just saying they were doomed since the instant they were born.

Id probably react the same as you because im not a robot, i too have emotionally driven impulses.

I think i didnt explain myself properly.

Of course if you switch consciousness and minds between two people, the choices made drastically change. What i mean is that since obviously thats impossible, we are doomed to make the same choices every single time if we could. Ultimately we agree.

OP a key philosophical concept of these thoughts you are having is free will. Do we have the power to make our own decisions, or are they simply part of a chain reaction that we have no control over?

Here's my take:

Even if we don't have free will, if we believe we have free will we will make better decisions and be more positive about our life. That's to say "the belief that we have free will" works as an "environmental influence" which results in better outcomes.

I personally believe in free will, and I think it's weak and a cop-out not to. My life was ****, I changed the way I thought, made better decisions, and now my life is better.

I've made this case thousands of times. The only things that determine your future are your genetics and the environment. And your responses to the environment are also dictated by genetics. There is no autonomy. We are all parts of this system we call a universe; we are cogs in a grand machine. While the future isn't exactly deterministic, it is approximately so at the scales we exist. Free will is an illusion.

Yes agreed 100%. Life is actually so predetermined it’s scary to initially think about. Even your thoughts and actions day today are preceded by the thoughts and actions that preceded them, and before and before and before, moment by moment. All set into motion by uncontrollable circumstances that you nor anybody else had any ability to influence.

For people who disagree, think of it like this: If you were born in the exact same place at the exact same time, with the same parents, brain structure, and genetic predisposition in the exact same environment etc as Osama Bin Laden, guess who you would turn out EXACTLY like.

People who resist this will fight it hard, it’s like an unconscious filter over their eyes. The ego won’t let them think they’re not in control.

Everyone really is just doing the best they can/all they know.

Right now im leaning towards the latter option, tho it may change in the future.

However, i like your way of thining a lot, believing we have free will will ultimately lead to more positive experiences/choices. I guess its on our best interest to believe in free will.

Aware me on this book brah. My particular life experiences didnt take me trough a path that eventually enlightened me on the subject, such as yours clearly did, so bear with me.

I’m on mobile, so I’ll be pretty superficial with my response.

Largely, that The Great Recurrence cannot be logically grounded, as in order for the idea to stand it has to be built on a foundation of nihilism. I also find it self-contradicting, so illogical (law of non-contradiction).

1. If life is just repeated over and over, and you cannot change the past, present, or future (which you couldn’t because it’s being repeated for infinity). Then what purpose does existence serve? It doesn’t. There cannot be any morality. This is what nihilism is.

2. If life is cyclical, then there is no purpose (as I mentioned in point 1 above). Well, then how can then a person try and create a purpose? A person can’t, because a person can’t create a purpose in something that has no purpose. You can try, but it’s ultimately meaningless, because existence itself serves no purpose. (Law of non-contradiction). Trying to create a purpose in a reality without purpose to put it in misc terms, is “cope”.

I agree almost 100%. There was a book I read by monk Thich Naht Hanh where he makes a similar comparison about a ****li pirate or something murdering a small boy and how everyone's natural inclination is to be furious with the pirate, but if you were born in the pirate's scenario, you'd be right there doing the same thing. I fully agree with that.

However, I do think that there is a level of self awareness that allows people to be the outliers to their inherited circumstances. Way too many rags to riches stories where all the indicators point to a specific person being a bum, but something clicks.

So good luck is uncommon ? Who would’ve thought ........

For every person that makes it , 100,000s dont

If anything that proves opies point even more ? You either get lucky by trying hard or you don’t

So basically, you either accept there is no purpose or you find one.

Man this thread was more depressing that i thought it would be lol.
