Personally, I reject nihilism. I am a theist, so naturally, I believe there is a purpose to life.

i don't want to summarize because i think it's a topic that needs to be expounded upon, but that's what im going with cause im not rewriting it. when i say "epigenetics" i know what it means but im not sure people do
basically,
lets use the gym. because you're able to go from from fat to skinny or skinny to fat or skinny to muscular, etc. it's an example of "epigenetics". if it were strictly "genetics" you would be born with the same fat content/ musculature you'd ever have. which is PARTIALLY true. of course it is, but again ---> talk about going from skinny to fat. you still have the same structure but it fluctuated
epigenetics = altered dna transcription from environment. turns certain markers on/off
on/ off represents "choice". e.g. there is choice, e.g. fat to skinny, skinny to fat, etc.
this is not proof against free will, this is proof for "choice"
and because you don't know how far "choice" extends it's moot talking about. you don't know your dna transcription will alter. so it might as well be free will. e.g. nobody could tell you what decisions you made could have significantly change; if you're in 1 decision, you don't know what the other is, etc.

This is an asocial opinion.
You know which strategies and goals to generally pursue for outcomes you want. This becomes clearer when making decisions together with other similar people to yourself.
Most importantly, in big picture decisions, you can learn and seek to learn certain principles to fight loyally towards regardless of pressures commonly derailing people. Seeking good leadership decisions seems like where this stuff looks like a 'choice' often.

look at a computer brah.
same structure, powered by the same source, same keys. obviously they can be different materials - my screen is not the same as your screen - but they are both screens
but look how many things you can do on a computer. even though its bounded by structure and its contents it still represents A LOT of choices; A LOT of things you can do; A LOT of decisions to make
computer is binary too. quantum is not and we know that quantum is a part of our reality; i guess it's a question if it's involved with our brain
we don't know how many choices are out there for our brains but it's definitely more than a computer. at least a non quantum computer

50/50 agree/disagree.
We do have free will - but within a limited range.
If I knew how to drew a picture on the internet I would draw a stick man and say that represents any one of us. Then draw a circle around the stick man and inside that bubble is where our free will is contained (do we want to sit or stand, take a shower or a bath, stay inside and rot or go outside and meet with friends). Outside it, are events such as snow, rain, stock market crash, epidemics, etc. external events not within our control.
The challenge is to learn where the bubble ends and how far can we push it out.
Also, agreed that our bubble will have pre-genetic disposition. Some people's bubbles are bigger or smaller than others, some can expand, and be mobile, others not so much. Additionally, while we did not control where or when our bubble originated, we can move it wherever external events and conditions make room for it, as well as choose whether and even how or when to interact with other people's bubble worlds or not.
Cliffs:
1) Agreed: pre-genetic disposition has strong influential factor
2) Agreed: external events are beyond our control
3) Disagree: we will always have free will - within our bubbles
4) The key is for us to learn how to bubblemax, lol

You can control how you react to things. We are slaves to our inherent hedonism, but as Men we are gifted with the power of rationality and choice. You can choose to eat cake, or fruit. You can choose to be angry, or accept the circumstances that were prescribed to you. It is certainly not easy, but it is not impossible. The important thing to remember is all that matters in this life is being of positive benefit to the community. If it's bad for the community it's bad for you.

You could give up and become homeless or something. Was that really your choice or a result of genetics/experiences?
We all think we have a choice when we stumble upon a crossroad, but do we? If we relive our lives a thousand times, we are always going to take the same path right? Since we lived exactly the same life. So do we really choose anything?

You have a choice to be homeless or not all you need is a job and your not homeless anymore so there is a choice most homeless don't want to work.

Too much cope and a lot of inaction is all I see among those under 35 these days.

This is not true. We may all have a path to follow set In stone but we have distractions in every step. Your own people may be telling you the wrong thing but that’s because they want something else out of you. It’s your choice to follow your path or to get distracted

You should read this book bro, the cover seems like random scifi bs but it's a very well put aproach in determinism

According to the auther we humans are mere actors and the destiny is the director, if we go against the flow of destiny we will only find pain and suffering. I believe in determinish and destiny srs.

i would imagine the weather is different and therefore your experience would differ. but even if the weather were the same.. you 100% replicated every event. I GUESS if you had the same exact genes
btw, they've cloned animals and there's ALWAYS something different. they use the same dna for 1 cat, but then the cloned cat is a different color
i just looked this up now in the middle of writing this and didn't even know the environmental factor is what they attribute to the difference ha

btw, determinism has been around FOREVER. there are ancient old greek philosophers discussing this
i can't remember who it was but one of the most disturbing theories i read was from an ancient greek guy. it was basically like all circumstances led down to this moment
epigenetics/ neuroplasticity, etc. is way more modern whereas determinism is old as fuk

I've said it before, I find the idea that people are somehow randomly interchangeable very odd and blatantly false. It's hard to explain though. You'd have to say what you think constitutes a person beyond their biology. If I was born as you then I wouldn't be me, I would be you, and vice versa if you were born as me.
The idea of equality is obviously wrong, and a lack of free will doesn't support it, but that said a CEO or billionaire isn't necessarily better than a homeless man.

We are all biological robots. That is the truth. We are basically giant computers following our program to find the best mate, get a higher score by getting stuff for our ego and to attract better mates, and then reproduce. 99% of behavior can be explained by this easily and by observing the way addictive things affect the way people behave. But when you ask someone everyone has the feeling of a subjective sense of control. Once you start to just observe your mind and your behavior patterns you will learn a lot about who your mind and body are. The ancient wisdom has said forever that we are not our minds or our bodies, but rather a massive collective consciousness or “god” existing beyond both. If you take drugs you will feel this feeling. If not it will take many years of meditation to break free of your mind and ego which have spent every year of your life strengthening their grip on you. This is the only way to true happiness.

You're basically saying free will dosn't exist, and I'm inclined to agree with you. We're all a result of our past and our genetic make up. I feel that there are things I have to do in order to be at peace with myself (stop watching porn, eat vegan if not at least vegetarian, meditate) and I believe I will do all of these things eventually lest I fall into a pit of depression and ultimately suicide. Although I already plan on doing that anyway when I'm old and life is no longer fun. Hunter Thompson style but without the good writing ability, fame and talent.
Looking back on my life, I could have done a million things differently, and they all would have led me down completely different paths, but the choices I made at the time I thought were for the best for me. We all make choices that we think are for the best and they lead us to where we are right now.
I believe we are the universe experiencing itself. We are stardust, we are all the same. From single celled organisms to Albert Einstein. Things will always level out for the planet to exist in its most optimal way (hence coronavirus - too many people on this planet).
