This is actually the second time bitcoin gets mentioned in this thread. Bitcoin may never actually 'fail' in terms of going to zero, but it has already failed in terms of mass adoption. It was on the world's stage in 2017 and failed in every aspect imaginable. There isn't a single need for it. Services like remitly and venmo already do what bitcoin claimed it was going to do. The only characters in the space are shady characters or straight up nerds. It's a vehicle for these shady characters to manipulate people into handing over their hard earned money. The entire space brings nothing beneficial to current society, nor does options trading. This is a prime example of technology doing more harm then good.

Do go on about your definition of "intelligence". Btw to your previous post, you can have all the knowledge you want (say about mathematical results)....this doesnt mean you can then automatically go on to prove something like the Green-Tao theorem*. Almost as if this requires more than just knowledge.

Where's the proof this man is intelligent?

Anyone can claim that their IQ is 200. Is there a video of Langan solving a difficult math problem or any proof whatsoever?

IMO this Langan guy is nothing but a mouth.

That is not the smartest man in America. Not even close. The smartest man in America is most likely one of our premiere mathematicians or cutting edge theoretical physicists.

It's probably Terry Tao, but there are certainly young prodigies coming up now who may be even smarter than he is, which is amazing. There are more geniuses alive today than ever before due to population growth and our ability to find them now in "chithole countries" where they would have otherwise been lost.

Mirin. Sounds good owning a few achres, having some animals and grow some food. Mhmm, I bet food you have grown yourself tastes good, since you know exactly where it came from. Hnnnnnngg

Gotta give some credit to Langan though, that at least he is trying to solve "reality" In my definition of smart, smart is someone who understands reality, understands what can be known and what cannot, and someone who is aware of their own nature. A person that doesn´t know these things, try to know these things or is at least aware of it, is not smart by my definition.

This guy is no closer to understanding "what" reality is than someone who lived 5,000 years ago. It's a mystery of mysteries. And, as discussed above, his attempts to explain it (he does his best to make it sound as deep and grandiose as possible) just fall under the umbrella of babble philosophy/metaphysics and are not interesting. On the other side, instead of inquiring about what exactly is reality, we can ask meaningful questions about what happens in nature and the way it works...and this would fall under the domain of science- the results are interesting, meaningful, and let's be honest, more difficult to investigate in many cases.

Malcolm Gladwell talks about this guy in "Outliers". Basically explains that this dudes severely lacking people skills is what resulted in him being where he is. Pretty interesting story. Also, Outliers was probably the most interesting book I've ever read. I Highly recommend it.

Imagine being a reviewer for that journal and getting this paper. I suspect even the most qualified would have trouble digesting it.
"Seen in the light of evolution, biology is, perhaps, intellectually the most satisfying and inspiring science. Without that light it becomes a pile of sundry facts -- some of them interesting or curious but making no meaningful picture as a whole."

For sure it’s quite complex and long (here’s an exposition, and no it’s not simple ..http://math.mit.edu/~fox/paper-green-tao.pdf)

A good exercise in math is to explain what the theorem is even saying, either the stronger or weaker version, and explain how this is different than say Dirichlet’s theorem on arithmetic progressions, which demonstrates (for example) that there are an infinite number of primes congruent to 3 mod 4.

I can’t even begin to wrap my head around that. How advanced does one’s background in math need to be to follow a paper like that? Would for instance an average math/physics PhD student be able to understand the central tenets of that article?

The point is, its not about IQ. Its about I will.

You need to be above average intelligence to do well in the world, well above to be successful in STEM fields and finance, but IQ alone will not guarantee your success if you are not willing to work hard at it.

No.

Someone with or pursuing a PhD in number theory might be able to get the gist of it, but an average math student or any mathematician outside of the field is unlikely to really be able to fully understand even just the summary posted by numberguy in its entirety, let alone the actual proof itself.

Some people just don´t care too much about becoming successful by standards societies have made up. It´s not about becoming successfull in the eyes of others. For me at least, it´s to live an enjoyable life. Farm life sounds like a good way to achieve that. I´m not interested in wasting my life on chasing success and doing stuff I don´t find interesting. You could be a genius that came up with some groundbreaking theory, and still be miserable and have a "worse" life than some stupid criminal.

He's probably one of the most intellectually gifted people in the world but not educated.

You can't reason beyond the current achievements of humanity without learning how we got here. Pushing the envelope requires preparation at any level.
