Friendly Reminder: Get Those Old Photos Labeled

If you have a family odds are someone (or several someones, likely female) has:

- boxes
- albums
- envelopes
- all of the above

Containing old family pictures. Some may be well organized, or they may just be a jumbled mess. There is a fair chance some pictures have multiple copies too because that was a thing (double prints).

During this down time between holidays (or just not getting out much) would be a great time to get some names and dates on those pictures; not for you maybe, but for other people who might want to know someday what their uncle or grandpa looked like.

I've been working through the pictures my mom collected and some I have a good idea of, some a decent guess, and some no clue really.

This one is easy and I think my daughter would recognize who it is even if I don't label it:

My mom around 18 or 20:
Spoiler!

These I don't know if she would guess. These are also my mom and I only know the one on the left is her because I know the story and I've seen the picture before. There was some story about mom being told her ears would get cut off and when she was teased about it she would cover her ears up. I guess the grownups though it was funny; mom hated it and was really scared:

Spoiler!

Pretty clueless on these, except that Ithinkthey are my maternal grandmother's family and not my maternal grandfather's.

Spoiler!

I think I know 2 of these (maternal grandfather & grandmother top left, maternal grandfather bottom left). The one on the bottom right I have just a family name (Dycke) and maybe I could make a guess if I dig through old genealogy records. The one on the right might be one of my great grandfathers as a young man, but I really don't know.

Spoiler!

Maybe you keep the pictures, or maybe your parents do, or your grandparents. Call and chat with them about this, they would probably be glad to hear from you. Or just ask them to get out the old pictures when you visit. You might learn something about your family that you didn't know.

Because it won't be too long before pics like this (maybe from your school days) look just as dated.

Spoiler!

Been doing something similar OP, dragged the photo box out the loft.

Will get them digitally uploaded to a hard drive at one point, however i do like the physical connection of the hard copies.

Actually not a bad idea. I just had a family friend die(he was super young) and with most deaths, the family had to go through box of pictures. Not sure how many were dated and stuff like that, but I think that would be sentimental information to know.

More so probably with grandparents and parents. A lot of my "generation" puts photos online now instead of actual physical pictures and those are e-dated and ****.

Oh I agree, it would be better to get them scanned. I'm not very tech savvy though. I have a printer that I think I can scan on, but don't have it set up or linked to a computer. When I got the printer it never occurred to me that it would be difficult to do that, but the laptop I have doesn't have a disc drive and it seems like I have to have a disc to get the drives on to the computer.

My moms got albums that are pretty well kept up. A long time ago I took the one from when my brother and I were little and organized it. I have a bin full of albums from before my son was born to when he was around 5 or 6. Then I stopped getting prints because it was digital. The problem is there are a couple years missing because the photo service deleted them I think.

Yeah, posted because I'm dealing with it myself and it seems like a good time generally. Even if you have old people in your family that are staying in they could do this via zoom...maybe.

I said it is probably women keeping the pictures. Maybe guys are less likely to do this themselves, but it wouldn't hurt to spend some time with your aunties and grannies. They might make you some cookies or set you up with a nice girl related to one of their friends.

You should just be able to download the installer for your printer onto your laptop and install them that way, so you wouldn’t need a disc drive. You can find them by googling your printer make and model (brother 2509 drivers).

Some are real easy to scan, where you literally lift the scanner and press a button. Others you need to have a program open on your computer to scan.

Beehive hairdos. This one was when she was 22:

Spoiler!

Could be someday that my daughter (or maybe kids of hers) will have a giggle over my Dorothy Hamill cut, or that 80s big hair with the tall bangs. Pretty sure there is a pic somewhere of my brother w/a mullet.

Sorry about your lost photos. I think I have lost some along the way too.
