Career future not looking bright, may receive write up

Been at the job for just over a year and seems like I’m just “not getting it.” Spent 2 days trying to install .NET framework on a new windows server (kept running into errors and online fixes did nothing) and ended up passing off to coworker.

Got in trouble for accessing a server I wasn’t supposed to (my thought was why do I have access in the first place)

Manager got mad because my documentation was confusing (I tend to overdocument things as I think it’s better to have too much info versus not enough)

There’s more but don’t want to turn it into a dear diary thread. I won’t get fired right away, will just receive a Needs Improvement mark which means no raise and 6 months to improve before I get fired.

If I do receive a bad review might as well just find something less stressful.

You will be okay. These things happen a lot to people (they just never tell you).

I was heading towards getting fired in a tech job I had, and I instantly started networking and landed 2 offers 100% higher in compensation (100% ded srs).

Think of it like a girl dumping you. There's always another sloot you can click with better.

Just unfortunate because it was the first real job I’ve had, plus family was super proud of me. I know there is plenty of jobs out there but it’s just discouraging feeling like I wasn’t good enough.

Lots of people confuse 'Not good enough' with 'Not a fit.'

There are too many businesses, too many people in this world, and you can't click with them all.

Sticking it out at a job for a year+ where you know this shows a lot more strength than people realize, and fortunately, you are in a field where you can comfortably look for other positions.

You can either work hard, and continue to dig yourself out of the hole you seem to be in at your current job, or you can live comfortably knowing you stuck it out til' the end of this position, continue to work on relevant skills in the field, and apply to other positions

I think it's good you at least have insight into your poor performance and know you need to improve. Try and ask colleagues that you trust how they do things and try and simplify the job. Wouldnt just think about jetting, the problems can travel with you. Focus on trying to get competent, and that will help bring the stress down.

Maybe frauded some, but my degree was in networking and I never took any courses on actual server management, so a lot of the stuff was new concepts. (Chef (config as code), AWS, pipelines,deploys, etc)

The company is known for hiring green pea college students so and it’s a billionaire company, so I’m in no way an outlier as it’s known for being a churn and burn type of company.

Your first year at a real job and you mess up? Welcome to the club. All the masters started at one time and got their asses handed to them a few times, that's what made them good. Yeah, they are going to give you chit about it and act like you're the first one to ever mess up but trust me, you're not and everyone has. Have a good attitude. Tell them you realized you messed up, that you know you aren't perfect, and that you learned from it and will do better next time. If they fired everyone who messed up there would't be anyone in the field.

Microsoft products are kind of in their own ecosystem. Its like you need a degree in Microsoft to be good at IT... not a degree in CS or networking.

I’ve been in IT for 25 years. I’ve moved up over the years and I’ve hired hundreds and fired hundreds over the span..

I’ve never fired a person that tried their best, had a good attitude, didn’t repeat mistakes or break policy numerous times.

I wrote up my global Director of Security numerous times. He is now my most trusted guy. You can come back from this. Ask for help, communicate and follow up. Showing care, concern and taking action go a LONG way.

use your admin access to monitor the boss's work internet use and find something breaking the rules (there almost always is) and leave a print out on the desk with a post it note "would hate for this to get out"

I didn’t receive a write up for what I thought I would (accessing a server I wasn’t suppose to). They were just curious how I did it and basically told me not to again because that server handles a lot of networking chit and could break something if a script is ran incorrectly.

Microsoft products are chit. Most the servers we use are Linux but there are a few windows one (I.e the one I was trying to install .NET framework on)

It could just not be a good fit. Considering looking for another job and getting a fresh start. Don't leave unless it's a good opportunity though.

Happened to me in my very first internship. The manager (huge feminist bish) didn't like me from day one (the person who hired me left before I started). It was my fault too.. I was pretty clueless and overwhelmed at everything.

these are the sorts of things that have to happen for a lot of people to become good at their job. happened to me in the beginning of my career because i do a shiitty job of paying attention to details and my progress notes used to look like ****. guess who never fuucks up notes now? gotta happen brah, shake it off, fix the mistakes and keep pounding.

OP I'm on my 2nd job in the career myself. Not quite the job you're in (Dev Ops / IT), but similar. Quit the first job because of numerous reasons, been in love with the second job (for the most part) ever since.

You mentioned you've got 6 months after receiving a "Needs Improvement" rating before you'd actually get let go. 6 months notice is plenty to start earning one or two relevant certifications that'll make you stand out from the crowd. First job is the hardest to get, second is easier since you've got work experience to reflect on and discuss, and then it just gets easier and easier from there. If I were you in your shoes, I'd decide on a specific certification, try to study and acquire it within 2-3 months, add it on LinkedIn / resumes, and start actually trying to find another job. I hate churn and burn companies, that was my last gig.
