I play a little chess, almost 100% of the time with 7-10 year old students (though to be fair I've also played with my two adult sons for most of their lives). Every year, I teach my students how to play and we play whenever we have time. This year it's been a digital chess game bc I'm virtual.

Anyway, I always thought it was a good way to teach them a little strategy while keeping their minds occupied as well as giving us a chance to have a conversation about other things I wanted us to talk about. And it keeps their attention fairly well because it feels like a game and not like a chore or busywork.

I've been thinking about starting a chess club at the school next school year, but I'm not an expert by any stretch. Just a guy that knows the rules pretty much. I couldn't legitimately teach people how to play for real if I didn't have more knowledge.

So far I bought Chess Fundamentals by Jose Capablanca and Bobby Fischer Teacher Chess by Bobby Fischer and I started reading the former yesterday. I also started watching some Youtube videos on openings like the Sicilian Defense.

After finishing those books, where should I go for information? Any great books or Youtube channels you recommend?

I'm going to talk to the local Chess Center about helping me once I feel like I have a clue.

Were the books on strategy pretty dry reading OP or were they ok to get through?

I just started Chess Fundamentals and it's not dry as much as I'm just not fluent in the algebraic notation yet. I have to keep looking over at a numbered board, then back at the notation, and so on. It's not difficult to grasp, I'm just not fluent in it yet.

I’ve played almost 10,000 games of chess and can say that there is always more to learn. Even when you think you’ve ascended, some dik head will show you how little you know.

Get good with an opening for white and an e4 counter for black.

Find someone you can play theory with an use takebacks to explore different lines and expand on openings with.

Study different endgames such as rook took vs queen, bishop knight vs rook, rook rook king vs rook rook king etc. a rook rook king endgame can go for hundreds of moves and can be frustrating with two experienced players.

Remember three things always in your opening, center control, development, and power squares.

Middle game is 100% theory and no one can truly comprehend the sheer number of lines.

No official tournaments but I’ve been rated at 2000 for 15 minute games on lichess which is upper 90s percentile.

I’m stills beginner by definition though as I only started playing semi srsly 4 years ago.

I suck at chess, but I recently found out about a very interesting way to play it. Have you heard about Fischer-Random chess?
It's a game where the pieces are arranged differently every time so it's less about opening memorization. I like to play it with bots here:

I just started playing in May due to the pandemic, before Queen’s Gambit. I bought a subscription to chess.com for their tutorials. I first tried it out, they offer about 10 tutorials for free.

I liked those tutorials so I did the $100 subscription for a year. There are other things offered by being a member. But the tutorials show a good method to teaching Chess to someone who may not want to get into a dry book. Checking the squares on the board as you read a book is tedious for a beginner.

I haven't heard of it but it sounds like a good drill for people who are so deep into the memorization aspect of it. There are a bunch of different game modes on lichess I'm seeing. One of them is custom. I bet you can set up a game like that.I'll check it out.

2020 what do you find to be the best opening for white and opening defense for black?

For people just trying to get started.

There is lots of good chess YouTube out there that analyze games, go over fundamentals (e.g. why you want to control the centre of the board).

I like a channel called Agadmator... he gets you to pause the video to find moves, briefly explains them and constantly says the names of the openings so you can get familiar. His videos are also nice because they are high level and like 10-15 mins. Won’t drag you down like a 40 min analysis.

I don't know how clear your minds eye is but once you can visualise the board vividly enough you can play with yourself anywhere (chess that is). Good for training the old short term memory too.

Kiop I kind of like the Scotch Opening for a white opening. It's somewhat similar to what I did anyway just from trial and error.

Great idea Dr. Drew.I'm no chess expert (1000-1200 ELO on chess.com), so I always open with e4 and try to directly control the center as white.

If I'm black, I like developing the flanks and using the hypermodern defense theory (control the center from the flanks) to bait white into overplaying their hand.

Sicilian Defense for black is one that comes to mind but my theory is pretty weak. I know a few lines but after about move 5-7 I'm just an intuitive player.

Don't know almost any end game theory, but I like to just jump straight to end game and use some minor pawn advantage I gained in the beginning to promote and then bottom out my opponent.

The King's Indian seems different because you can kind of hang back instead of meeting in the middle and fighting it out right off the bat.

I read somewhere that after move 4 there are over a billion possibilities, so yeah, I think the opening is all about setting yourself up to play intuitively.

I didn't know we had so many chess players. Maybe we should have a Misc chess tournament sometime.

Openings, tactics, then end game theory. That’s simplifying it a lot because those are very broad but I’d start out with learning all the frequently played openings and getting them to recognize checks, forks, pins, etc.

When they (and you) get a bit more proficient at the game you can review GM games and get a sense for how they think and play.


What it really comes down to though; play a lot. You can learn all the theory you want, but you need to play to improve.

There are tons of free online platforms that will let us organize this.

I play in a league on chess.com and we have tournaments at least twice a month. If we can put together a list of 8 interested miscers I will volunteer to set the tourney up and we have a chittalking thread on the misc for lulz.

As I said, my ELO floats between the laughably poverty 1000 and extremely poverty 1200. FIDE ranks start getting handed out around 2200-2400 if I'm not mistaken and Magnus Carlson (current reigning chess champ, heralded as the a top-5 all-timer) is ranked around 2900.
