what is the god dam* term for it?

there's a biological term for it and i feel like its on the tip of my tongue. i think its starts with an "a"

i think it's an adapted trait to stand out. but its the only thing that makes sense

cause who wants to stick a piece of metal in their nose. def. doesn't help for survival so it automatically creeps over into sex territory
