Has anyone in here read the Wheel of Time series? I am starting the 8th book. Each book is 800-900 pages, so they are beasts. How many of your books each year are behemoths like these?

I like King's 11/22/63 enough that I've read it once for each of the last three years. It's 849 pages long.

Remember that this is a "do your own thing / set your own goals" kind of thread. Not many, but a few prefer to set a goal of how many pages they read . . . some multiple of 365 x 10 or x 20 or etc seems to make sense if you wanted to try that.

Have considered it many times, started once on the first audiobook on a plane trip, but I didn't continue listening to it.

If the behemoth is a good book it's not a problem.
I am currently considering re-reading The Count of Monte Cristo for the n-th time, the penguin edition are 1312 pages, and it's almost too short. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...f_Monte_Cristo)

Since you guys have recommended 11/22/63 so many times I have started listening to it when I am going for walks. I guess I haven't come to the part where I can't put it down yet.

I'll give this a go this year, got a few penguin classics to get through to start me off.

Great points, I’m going to count it because it wasn’t just a skim fest but really something I feel like I take lessons and inspiration from every time. I do love heavy books tho and after “Evil Geniuses” is “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism”

I’m a huge Hemingway fan, and “A Moveable Feast” is fkn hnnnggg 10/10 but I also really enjoyed “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “To Have and Have Not” are big favorites.

Hello all and happy new year! I barely posted ITT for 2020 but I'm back and will keep updated this year. I finished 20 books and my goal for this year will be 25-30. The last book for 2020 was China Rich Girlfriend from the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. It was alright nothing special, and not as good as the first. I gave it a 3/5. My favorite read for the year was the entire Power of the Dog trilogy by Don Winslow. It was so interesting and had me hooked the entire time. Thanks to everyone that posted about it before. Just started The Poppy War, The Way of Kings, and halfway through Lies of Locke Lamora.

I'm not looking to build a library, but some books are good enough that I want to read them nearly once per year so my wife bought that one for me. Great book with chilling chapter about how the losing faction must walk the gauntlet (to the edge of a cliff IIRC) by the winning faction

I just finished Winslow's The Force (my third "read" but this time I listened to it and the voice actor was simply AWESOME). The Force is definitely one of the best five books I've ever read.

I go by the "a book is a book is a book" rule. I read at least one or two 1500+ page doorstops a year, so I don't feel bad counting something like Sam Harris' "Lying" which is a 50 page brain bomb.

If you really care about your stats I know some bros go by pages read vs books completed.

I read the book The Worm last year and the word count is like 1.6 mil. So as Gimli said "That still only counts as one".

1. A Dog's Purpose

Book 1 of the new year in the can. Much better than the movie. I like dogs (always have two) and the movies were easily relatable so found the first book more than interesting. Was a good read. My rating is a solid 5 of 5.

Next up: A Dog's Journey then may delve into a few political fictions.

Not what I expected out of a Philosophical Novel (compared to War and Peace or Brothers Karamazov)..if you can even call it that. I wasn't raised in a church so I'd have to do much further study on Neitzsche before I could even comprehend what he's even trying to say. In other words, it's too complex for me to truly grasp the symbolism and metaphors. I just don't have the background to realize the profundity of it.

You're not the only one...I tried that in my twenties...was like 'WTF is this??' I still see Neitzsche and think he was an idiot. "That which doesn't hurt me makes me stronger', nope!! I don't want to spend five years in a concentration camp just to get stronger.

OK idiot might be a bit strong, but not really a fan.
