The laptops are provided by the US government. Those laptops are meant to basically "explode" if they are lost or stolen....and by explode I mean locked and wiped clean. When she reported her laptop was missing the IT/Security team would immediately initiate a lock/wipe.

It's just ridiculous that people here cannot accept the fact that laptops were stolen and even the media reported it. Why would they report on it if they just had "presentation" material on them? We have a lock and wipe system at my work. All laptops have it because people have client and bid information on them and it’s sensitive data. In addition our executives regularly visit China. We need to be able to lock and wipe laptops if they are stolen and or confiscated and we use the system regularly.

There are numerous types of lock/wipe systems. There are stand alone systems and those that work with disk encryption. At the very highest level (not specific to one type of system) the laptop has software that communicates with a host system. The host system can send remote lock and wipe instructions to the remote laptop. In addition the laptop “phones home” in scheduled intervals and if the host doesn’t respond (think of submarine ping) the laptop will either lock or lock and wipe.

It would basically be a race against time to prevent Pelosis laptop from being remotely locked by the host. You would need to get it away from network connectivity or get the drive out of the laptop. Then you have to worry about the software “phoning home” and doing a wipe.

The odds the PC is locked from inactivity is 100% since you took the time to get it out of the building or removed the drive. Your only option at this point is to hook the laptop up as an external drive in an environment that isn’t connected to the internet. Now you get to deal with disk encryption. You either have the admin of the disk encryption give a rescue code or you have to break the encryption. All in all a very difficult task and no easy day.

If any of this actually occurred people from the agencies that do espionage and or stealing devices to copy data for a living would be assisting and or involved. We have no way of knowing what backdoor hardware access they have strong armed vendors to put in place or what software tools they have to overcome all of the challenges I’ve listed.

Without a bunch of “magic” from a three letter agency we don’t know actually exists, it’s a very difficult if not impossible task, however.

At some level, I agree. There are DOD approved wipes but I would never trust a software wipe. It’s either full disk destruction or degaussing. We degaus while the disk wait for pick up for onsite destruction.

The reality is that a DOD wiped ENCRYPTED drive is a bad day for anyone trying to retrieve data. Is it possible, yes. Is there a very good chance you can’t get anything out of it, it’s missing data or is corrupted, yes.

I’ve sent a LOT of encrypted wiped drives to a physical restoration service back in the days and more times than not we got nothing for the 2k we spent..
