I am a huge plant nerd. I like to collect leaves and samples of everything flora, ranging from moss and weeds to shrubs and trees. I have 67 species and can talk about each one of those sons of bitches for at least 10 minutes.

My mom had a big bug collection similar to your plant records, she also built mini doll furniture out of metal sodapop lids.



I just collect rocks if I'm traveling and clean them up once I'm home. Put varnish on them.

Other than reading, homes and gardens are probably my most long-standing. Make floor plans (sometimes landscape plans) on graph paper, attempt elevations now and then. I grew up with family that grew things, made things, and fixed things.

I get inspired by ideas I come across and then want to incorporate them into a floor plan. Or I like to work within some type of limitation of overall size or dimensions.

I think most of the things I get interested in incorporate both visual and functional elements.

Awesome, I've been getting into changing things up around the apartment, now that I spend a lot of time home. Baby steps though, with simple changes like rearranging furniture, modifying cabinets and such. I've also been doing part time reno jobs for a few landlords on my street since I started school.

Do you monetize these hobbies of yours or is it strictly interest? What kind of reading do you do?

I keep track of the rocks location and year I got them. Some i collect in groups. Some are individuals I found randomly and they catch my eye.

Some I keep in wooden boxes, some I end up putting ontopof my indoor plants to keep some moisture locked in / decoration.

So far just interest for the most part. I worked in nurseries (plants) for quite awhile, 6-7 years I think. So there was some helping customers choose plants for their house sort of thing...some would bring in photos.

I used to read a LOT. Pre-internet that was newspapers, magazines, library books and then paperbacks once I has some money of my own. I've probably read more fantasy and sci-fi than anything else.Cool.

My daughter has a rock collection that is more varied/prettier which is mainly composed of rocks that she has purchased or received as gifts. There is/was a really cool little shop in Ypsilanti. I've just picked up ones that I like now and again. Some I remember where I got them, and some not.

Nice. I actually also have a couple leaf journals from some plant ID classes I took. We would get tested weekly on botanical and common names. Class basically consisted of going around campus to collect samples.

I'm actaully starting to gain interest in succulents specifically, but don't really know a whole lot about the differences between them yet. I spent a week on a road trip through baja and the landscapes were pretty amazing. Fields of cactus right on the coast with aqua waters. Expansive sand dunes on the beach. There are a lot of joshua trees there as well.

There's a lady in my town who converted her whole house into a bird house. She has two pet ravens inside her home. Tbh tho I don't like that she keeps them vs. releasing them considering they're all healthy. She has probably around 800 birds including turkeys and peacocks.






@katya, I started off like your daughter. I'd come across beautiful rocks I really wanted to purchase but I h8 spending money. I challenged myself to look for "hidden gems" within random rock piles in the city, during a mountain hikes or a beach venture.

@madninjaskills- sewing isn't dorky, it's nerdy and cool. I only do hand stitching on clothes that get worn out and i want to patch up. One day id like to create my own garments etc.

Ok. Maybe the sewing isn’t dorky, but I know my love of Star Trek is lol.
Once you know the basics on a simple machine, you can learn to make anything. I’ve been sewing since I was 10.

I got, somewhere in my files, pictures of blue jays, red cardinals, other ducks, herons, ravens. I love predatory birds, but getting pictures of them is damn near impossible. I came across a great horned owl the other week but couldn't get a picture.Hehe, I got an associate's? (technical) degree in forest management almost a decade ago and we had a plant identification class. That is exactly where my hobby took its roots (no pun intended). Only started collecting seriously about 3 years ago.

I am not familiar at all with succulents, as the plants near me are indigenous of boreal climates, but I find them fascinating. If I remember correctly most of them are CAM plants, and that's about all I can remember from them right now lol. Why succulents?

I'm mirin your trip to those more arid climates, I find the plants from those regions unbelievable, the way they adapt to their climate. Joshua trees sure are funny looking lolAhhh I see you are a sci-fi novelist, good stuff.

Hard to pick a favorite bird, I love all of them. Owls are at the top of my list. I got into it on accident, I found a baby grackle alone (parents dead) in a Kroger parking lot and I took care of it overnight while I looked for a bird rescue. I drove there the next day so the little guy could have a second chance.







This little burrowing owl was my most favorite bird at the rescue. He was the only one that would let me hold him and pet him. Before I started working overseas, he got sick and he died two weeks later. It was the hardest I cried in a long time.

I started collecting Warhammer 40K with some friends this year and I love it. Takes about 2 hours to paint each individual model but the battles are super fun.

Hoping to get in some tournaments when COVID goes away.
