I don't think the bolded parts (or anything in this post, really) are true at all. The evidence certainly doesn't point that way. Here's a list of the 25 nations with the highest suicide rates. Virtually all of the countries on the list are poor/developing. I don't know that stats that track mental illness are recorded, so suicide seems like an appropriate proxy (for severe mental illness, at least). Likewise, I would say poverty is a good proxy for what you describe as "hardship". So there are some assumptions here, but I think they're fair.

I also bought my first house at 26, because I was basically broke even then. I didn't start making decent money until 3-4 years ago.

I was born in a third world country, and I only know of one person from when I was still living there to commit suicide, and he was a criminal who was running from the law after murdering a woman. Inversely, I know about many people from my extended circle having committed suicide here in the US.

Being poor sucks, but I'm not recommending people be poor.
