Actually just nearing the end of an interview that touches on this. Guy has a new book coming out:

Extraterrestrial: The First Sign Of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth

Cliffs:

- Intelligent life has most likely arisen on other planets based on pure probability.
- Odds are humans are a middling level form of intelligent life.
- We spotted an object traveling through our solar system that doesn't appear to be "just a rock" or a comet. But by the time we figured out this was true the object had traveled too far away from us to send a probe to check it out.
- There is a new type of telescope being created that should be able to identify objects like this much more often, so perhaps we will be able to send a probe to check out things like this in the future.

I assume this is referring to ʻOumuamua. There is major skepticism towards Loeb’s claims in the scientific community- as there should be regarding any claim of alien visitation or passing through. Its characteristics are consistent with a small body of natural origin.

Carl Sagan, who was interested in finding evidence of ET life more than anyone, understood the need for skepticism in terms of UFO claims, and that the evidence and facts themselves should be the guide, not the wishes and desires of the person investigating. And those facts better be extraordinary and compelling (which I don’t believe we have whatsoever with ʻOumuamua). One need look no further than Percival Lowell and his Mars canal/civilization fiasco around 1900 to see what happens when personal wishes supersede the actual evidence.

He makes the case that the characteristics are not consistent with a small body of natural origins. From memory:

- says that it is actually very rare for an object from outside the solar system to pass through

- says there was one other outside object spotted after this one which was consistent with a comet

- says that the possibly alien object rotated every 8 hours and this was detected due to a change in reflectivity which he says indicates an unusual geometry or an object that is made of more than one type of material

Around the wrap up he talked about "experts" and encouraged young people entering the sciences to not be discouraged by experts as he believes that there is too much group think/closed-mindedness. Said that he personally experienced multiple instances where he took an idea to an expert that dismissed it, so he stopped working on that idea. Then later someone else who heard his idea and followed up on it received credit for the work when the idea was later accepted.

It was a good interview IMO. I think I like the last half hour or so best myself.

ETA: Just remembered that he said they found there was a "push" beyond what would be expected from normal forces from gravity/the sun.

I don’t want to argue with you about the theory of evolution because I understand a persons beliefs can come into play.

When Darwin put forward his theory of evolution he always said it was an idea and not necessarily the definitive answer.

As your reply I can’t be bothered explaining to you how evolution works because IMO it’s basic knowledge and if you don’t know I suggest you read a book as for me explaining it to you no thanks as I’d rather get ready for the packers to beat the rams

Although I find it amusing that you find humans being aliens from another planet more plausible then evolution

This is changing nothing in my post- we certainly donothave extraordinary evidence that this body is some alien spacecraft. Saying things like interstellar objects are rarely detected does not constitute extraordinary evidence. Nor is even slight trajectory adjustments outside gravity- there can be natural explanations. What would be extraordinary evidence in this case- say, I dunno, an actual up-close visit to the small body, repeated radio signals from the direction of the object containing the sequence of the primes, or something to that extent (this particular object, of course, is associated with no radio transmissions).

What do we actually have for evidence? Well just some telescopic observations, a bland spectrum that shows it’s consistent with some reddish rocky object and the presence of tholins, which are organic compounds common in comets etc. The object itself is literally tumbling through space, as small bodies tend to do.

Are there some questions that it would be interesting to understand? No doubt, such as its comet vs asteroid nature, and if there indeed is off-gassing. But does it make sense to conclude this is some alien spacecraft, or even probably one? Absolutely not, given what we have. Proper skepticism is vital in scientific investigation. The reason the scientific community’s skepticism was brought into this is to illustrate the fringe-ness of Loeb’s claims. This is something to consider for people who don’t want to spend hours diving into the actual studies, science, and evidence involved.

Personally I'm not that passionate about the subject either way. I do think there are a lot of things we don't have a concrete explanation for. That doesn't mean that the answer to these questions is automatically aliens or something supernatural.

Loeb mentions in the interview though that these are the types of questions that capture the public's imagination and spur an interest in the sciences. Says that he believes it is foolish/short-sighted to immediately dismiss scientific exploration for answers to questions that people care about.
