We had a good snowfall today, around 25cm or so. It was actually really serene out. The snow was incredibly heavy and wet so it stuck to the trees. I got inspired to try and paint an "after the snowfall" type of scene after working outdoors all morning.

I tried to create this vignette look and aimed to create the illusion of heavy snow hanging off the tree branches. Overall, I wanted to paint something really soft and simple using a very limited palette - blue, black, white, and a touch of brown for the tree trunks.

Winter has officially begun, it seems.

I really don't have much experience with any kind of painting or drawing, so it's hard to compare to other mediums. I often will use acrylics and various colored gessos to paint "underpaintings" that I then add oils to. That can create some interesting effects. I really like oils, though. For a guy with 0 art experience, they were a very forgiving medium to use. It's difficult to fuk up so irreparably that your entire painting can't be salvaged. As Bob Ross said, "we don't make mistakes, just happy accidents."

Im an acrylics fan but I tend to mix mediums too. Water color and pencil are my personal favorite mediums. Oh and china painting (it’s not like that paint your own pottery places, much different)

Thank you, my friend. I actually paint shirtless while wearing these paint-stained old sweatpantsOil paint is really messy so I figured the less I wear, the less I stain.

Nice painting

Luckily, the hot tub is in my basement next to my bar - both of these are next to my recording studio. It's a nice little area I've set up. It was actually quite nice to walk in from hours outdoors in the tundra, strip off my wet clothes, and just jump in there and relax for 20min. It's great the day after back training too. Those jets do wonders for aching muscles.

The painting is 18x24. That's my favorite dimension to paint on. It's also the size Bob Ross used in his show. Honestly, I had no experience at all 2 years ago. I just bought some oil paints and brushes and decided to try following along to a Bob Ross episode once a week. Due to my schedule, that quickly became once every 2 weeks, but I kept that going, almost 2 years now. I don't think there's any magic involved here. I had the interest, the dedication, and I put in the time, and that's how progress is made. I don't really believe in the concept of innate talent. I'm a musician myself and have been composing music half my life. That's my primary artistic outlet. That took a lot of time and dedication as well. I have old recordings of myself playing guitar as a teen and they sound just terrible.

Practice and dedication are key!

I'm currently not interested in selling paintings but they are piling up, so in the future I might have to offload a few. I have no idea what a painting like this could sell for. The shipping from Canada would most likely be an absolute nightmare.

Thanks! I try to approach every painting I make with an improvement goal in mind. This time around, it was really focusing on the snowy highlights and continuing to work on my own personal style of painting evergreens.
