So if everyone truly wanted to be happy, then why isn't everyone prioritizing the training of their mind to think mostly happy thoughts???

I think the reason for this is because most people miss the fact that it's a feedback loop. Not only do you have happy thoughts when you feel happy but you also feel happy when you have happy thoughts. Both are causes and effects of each other at the same time. When people only focus on the loop in one direction, they think they need to rely on external factors to get the happy wheel to start spinning. Unsurprisingly however, the happiness from external factors never lasts long for people whose thoughts are quick to default back to negative and thus, turn the entire feedback loop negative.

See, there's only two kinds of thoughts you can have. Statements. Or questions. Each of these can then either be negative, neutral, or positive. So be honest with yourself...what kind of statements or questions do you spend most of your time practicing? Whatever answer you give...well that's who you are because you know what they say about practice...

So if you want to feel differently, then start practicing thinking differently. It won't be easy but it is simple. Make it a habit to replace negative thoughts with positive ones (or even neutral ones if you have a hard time being positive at first). For example, if you're an anxious person like me, then you probably spend a lot of time asking too many questions and doubting things. If you have low self-esteem, then you probably spend a lot of time thinking bad things about yourself. The list goes on but at the end of the day, you are what you practice. And while we can't control emerging thoughts from the get-go, we CAN interrupt them and replace them with a different thought. In psychology i think it's called redirection. "The sky is blue." "I love my dog." "I'm excited for dinner". Anything that is more positive or less negative than your initial negative thought...is better. As time goes on, I believe the redirective thoughts will become more refined and more powerfully positive.

That's it. If you got through the whole thing, thanks for reading. I know there are some of you like me who had already achieved everything they thought they wanted and still didn't feel happy. Well now i know that i can't expect that to ever change if I continue to let my brain run too many negative scripts. I've only just started my attempt at retraining my brain and I already feel a huge difference. I hope this helps someone.

As cliche as it sounds it is within you. Unlocking it may take terrible mistakes and failures in life. You might find yourself rock bottom, jobless, and alone and remember how much worse life could be through experience. Relationships, jail, whatever. Being happy means being a real man IMO. Leave that 150k job for a 60k one if you love it.

yeah it's good advice with good intentions

but it's kind of like telling someone: just be good looking bro

There is a reason people have 'negative thoughts', they don't wake up one day with them. Examples:

- Traumatic upbringing
- Constant disappointment, specially early in life
- lack of a support network
- abusive parents
- diseases, financial issues, mental issues
- Loss of loved ones

etc.

you get the point.

brb haven’t met one vaxcel who doesn’t get defensive or mad when you tell them you didn’t get it.

No “vax” for HIV after 40 years of research. No vax for cancer after 100 years of research. No vax for the common cold and yet a virus mysteriously appears and Within 12 months a “vax” is found by 4 pharma companies all within 1 week and we are mandated to take it ….

I appreciate the positivity, OP, but I just don't understand how people believe this.

If all it takes to be happy is focusing on positive thoughts and rejecting negative thoughts, then wouldn't more people have an easier time finding happiness in life? Do you also think that nothing outside of the thoughts you tell yourself can influence your disposition / mood? It seems to me that if you live a chitty life full of legitimately depressing episodes (death of loved ones, divorce, war, etc.) that really no amount of thinking happy thoughts can make up for the overwhelmingly negative lived experience.Someone help me understand.

I believe that people can only be happy if their lives are decent and their life experiences have been mostly positive and reaffirming. I think it is impossible for someone who's lived a life of, say, abuse to ever find true happiness until they're able to accumulate an equal or greater amount of positive life experiences. I doubt that people who spend decades in refugee camps, for example, could find happiness by focusing on the one cup of rationed rice that they end their day with...

You can literally use repetitive self talk to improve your overall mood and positivity. You can approach it in a completely mechanical manner and it still works. It's simpler than 'thinking happy', you merely repeat x number of phrases x times each per day.

I'm just saying no amount of positive thinking will take away the pain of real oppression. What it does is create flocks of arrogant miscers who think that if anyone speaks out against pain that they are "trolls" who don't have mental discipline. I can't stand Marcus Aurelius.

Also, your post illustrates an important characteristic of philosophy in general: it's the domain of those with very little that actually needs to be done. You allude to this when you state that the basic needs must already be met for the ideas to take on significance. Yeah, I can get on board with that. Wishing away fake problems with solutions that are literally nothing more than thoughts is entirely possible, but what about real problems? Brick, mortar, bags of food and medicine, soldiers with guns and training. Those to me are solutions. Not some cot damn dead guy telling starving kids and old folks who are dying in their own excrement to man up. edit: tbh shouldn't be surprised because women just cannot grasp any philosophy, philosophy is made from men for men, it contains a level of depth that women can not and will not ever be able to understand due to their nature.. women have no space in that topic
even though i understand where this subhuman trash whore is coming from, negs for life are still warranted for having the audacity to THINK her very narrow interpretation of such a topic is not only valid, but warrants her bashing on not only the dead, but also one of the highest exalted men ever lived and the - i quote - "the last good emperor" of a time and place where humanity and society was at one of its peaks
hehehe. Is it hard yet?
What do you mean, the "part following your logo?"
Your analysis of my appreciation of philosophy is on point. I have no patience for sticking my head that far up my ass so as to appreciate the perspective of most of those dusty philosophers. One correction however is that my lack of appreciation for philosophy has nothing to do with my glorious meat cave.
Here's the sad truth about real pain. It can't be wished away. The veteran on the street corner, drinking his life away isn't doing that because he lacks mental fitness. He's doing it because the problems he's lived are completely real.
I hate it too, bro. But the good news is that real problems can be met with REAL solutions. Telling someone it's all in their heads is BS. That's why I have a particular rage against your pet philosopher. Few things are as enraging as being couched in stoicism rather than being given food and shelter. "Suck it up, cupcake!" is not what you tell someone who is trying to fix a broken leg or whatnot.

Once you have the basic needs met in your life, do you think suffering goes away? How are bags of food, medicine, soldiers going to help people that already have their basic needs? Suffering from thoughts such as guilt, shame, regret etc. please enlighten to us how these are fake problems? You cannot 'solve' these without introspection to the mind and pragmatic solutions. If basic needs are not being met then yes that is a 'real problem', but 'problems' and suffering does not suddenly disappear once you had basic needs.

Also just fuking LOL that you have concentrated the quote 'Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.' to mean kids and old men that are starving in excrement need to 'man up'. Total ignorance to the subject.

Don't even know why I am replying. I guess because I hope through my response you can see how narrow minded you are, but tbh you are just brain rot with that reply.

I know a lady who's happy all the time. Always smiling, very charming. People love her. Even when she's dealing with a negative situations it still seems like her happiness level is high. Just one it two people have told me they were annoyed with how happy she always seemed. Like who is always that positive and bubbly? Something must be wrong with her right?

But years later, thinking back on her, I think maybe it's us that are fukked up and she's the normal one. She's maxing out the potential of and enjoying each day. She's truly grateful to be alive. I wish I could be like her tbh.

Tbh, I did intend the message of my post to be geared toward people who have little to no worries about basic needs or any major health issues.

HOWEVER...the point of my post still stands for ANYONE. This is a reply for you and others who are making similar arguments:

1st, I never said there's not going to be reasons behind negative thoughts...of course there is. I would agree that people aren't necessarily to "blame" for their negative thought patterns. Most of them probably have to do with our childhood and how our parents raised us.

2nd, how do you guys think people that manage to overcome all these difficult external circumstances, do it? Take 2 people with the same exact set of terrible circumstances. I have no doubt in my mind that the person who believes in themselves more and has a more positive outlook, will do a lot better. I think to argue against this is a bit crazy.

It will never be possible or practical to have zero negative thoughts. What i think is helpful to anyone though, is to identify negative thoughts that become redundant, counterproductive patterns and replace them with positive/productive thoughts where possible. Again, very obvious, but for some reason most of us never take a conscious practical approach to actually doing this, hence my post.

Mirin. I am wishing the same and hope i will get there or at least something close to it.

I've experienced being around only a handful of people like her. What's crazy is not only that their own spirits are so high, but also that it's infectious and they brighten everyone's day. Like unless you have major issues, coming across someone like that instantly makes your day better. What’s common sense to one may not be easily comprehended by another depending on their experiences growing up and through life.

For some it’s as easy as “fuk man this is a terrible situation. I fuken hope this chit gets over fast”. They deal with it or wait for it to pass and it does affect em negatively but they don’t ponder over it and move on

For others same situation could be “oh fuk. Why me? Always me? I’m dead this time. What am I gonna do? I’m so screwed” then they deal with it give up maybe even. While dealing all they can think is negative things from the past and present and potentially in the future. Then once it’s over they’re like “one more to the list. I’m so screwed. It gonna happen again tomorrow. Damn damn damn” and they loose sleep and hair over it and so on and so forth.

Is it genetics? Is it the experiences growing up? I wonder what and why...

Dont chase happiness in life. It is a fool's errand. Happiness is not something that can be grabbed and held. Happiness is fickle and fleeting...it will come and go in your life like the wind.
Instead seek fulfillment by finding your purpose in life. The purpose-driven life will yield satisfaction that chasing happiness will not.

I think this is why I'm a happy person in general. My parents from a young age taught me to be grateful for what I have. Provided for me in every way that I could, but living in a rural poverty-stricken county, I was reminded that so many people don't have these things.

So that's my way of thinking. Something goes wrong? At least I have a roof over my head and don't have to worry about where my next meal is coming from. Have a bad day? At least I can come home and relax. Someone pisses me off? Well at least I've got a wonderful family and friends. School too frustrating and time-consuming? At least I'm in dental school, most people who apply don't get in.

Gratitude serves as a framework for building happiness.

I agree with this it is a good method. No matter what is going on in your life you can either be happy or unhappy just based on your outlook. Optimism or pessimism. Choose optimism instead and enjoy the present moment.

damn you just described a close friend of mine. she is exactly like that, always looking on the positive side, always smiling and everybody likes her, if you didn’t like her then most likely it was you who had the issue. i used to think it was just a bit of a front, i’d try to get her to open up cuz she had to be depressed sometimes right? but nope. her life isn’t particularly amazing or anything just your average person. she truly just believes everything would always work out no matter what and i’d question her as to how she could be so sure and she would say “it just has to”. i wish i had her mindset, i can’t even generate a fraction of her positivity
