Girls online who ask you right away what your occupation is

- in late twenties
- anybody else get that question nearly right of the bat . Something like " oh so what do you do for a living " or " where do you work "

- i find people who ask that question immediately kinda annoying . I'm not ashamed of my job ( I work a regular govt office job rn ) but why would you want to disclose to someone who you just started talking to where you work

I ussually keep it pretty vague and just say like " govt office job " damn sure ain't gonna tell you what department and all of that right away

And I gauranteed those girls are looking for someone to say " oh I'm a dr or lawyer or some professional or sum chit"

If you say " I'm a garbage man " prob won't ever hear back

I'm not even interested to know where a girl works until i get to know them a bit .and I never ask specifically because I know a lot of people like to keep that private right off the get go .

When people ask and I say I'm a lawyer, it never got weird or blatantly predatory.

Edit: I should clarify that I missed the "online" part. I just meant when random people ask me in the ordinary daily course.

Just lie. For example If you sell drugs just say you’re a pharmacist.

If you can’t do that with your job just say you’re an engineer

Tell them sales. Salaries range from $20,000 to $500,000 per year on average. Don’t get any more specific than that

It’s not a huge deal. It’s generally a screen for unemployed people

And yes your work is part of your identity. You spend 40 hrs a week doing it.

I agree that it's normal conversation.

I'm just nitpicking you a bit, but your work is not your identity. I might spent 40 hours a week doing a particular thing, but that doesn't mean that thing is part of who I am. It's something I am required to do in order to pursue the things that make me who I am.

It's a part of your identity inasmuch as being an adult who has to pay bills is part of your identity. It's something we all do, and only really matters if you're passionate about it.

Specifically as a signifier of "guy who is an adult/has a job/takes care of himself", sure I can concede that it's part of your identity. For anything else it merely signifies "Guy who is willing to put in work that he doesn't enjoy specifically because it will pay off later".

Maybe that's just me nitpicking a bit too hard though

I actually agree with OP. I get the importance of having a good career, but it’s such a dull fukin question to ask within the first few minutes, almost kind of rude (srs).

I guess it’s something you have to get used to when dating online after a certain age.

That's not just females who ask that question. People in general tend to over-obsess about work, and what others do for work. It's basic societal programming that taught us to put way too much emphasis on what people do for work in terms of giving them some sort of identity.

That said, I can't totally blame a woman for asking about that in terms of a potential dating partner. I mean, I won't lie, I'd wonder what a female did for work too before I dove into anything even remotely serious. I won't say I'd automatically say no based on them having a chit paying job, but I'd be catious about getting involved with a female who made dogchit money.

Though to be fair, debt and money management skills have just as much to do with how you evaluate a potential dating partner/actual dating partner as their income. I've seen countless examples of potentially very comfortably middle class people set themselves way back because they have too much debt/spend too much damn money in general on things they don't need or could wait for. If they set themselves so far back with bad financial decisions that they might as well be working an entry level cashier job somewhere, then they might actually be a worse financial prospect than someone who does said low-paying work but is smart with their money.

It's also normal conversation, like when guys meet someone, because for the majority of adults, their work forms a gigantic portion of their lives. It's like asking about kids or your hobbies or sports, it's a way to form connections.

Like you say you're a lawyer, I'm going to ask what area and then attempt to ask non-retarded questions so you can explain stuff to me. No different to if you said 'barman'.
