It's not as good as it sounds. I'm in this position in a government job. I work as hard as I can on the projects I get but there simply isn't much to do.

Most days I feel like a leech on society srs.

It would probably be better if you figure out a way to be super efficient with your job, but don’t let on that you are. That way you can be assigned a project that they think will three weeks, and you bust it out in 1 day, then still deliver it early.

I have this job. It is goat.

I am an engineer for the gov’t, because of covid I was able to change my job to be 100% virtual. I’m good at talking to people so I just want present data and reports for a few hours each week. I have a small farm in a mountain valley, it’s the best situation imaginable.

If you're making $100k "easily" then it's not a decent salary in comparison to the cost of living in that area.

Work in IT in the fed gov't making roughly 90k. Coworkers are doing exactly what you described. I try to stay busy to make the time fly buy. Couldn't do it for more than a few years. Going to move to the private sector w/ my experience, knowledge, and certs I've acquired and am working on. No degree here either. I was a comm guy in the military and walked into my job.

I used to want to be CIO $3k/day. Then I started making 6 figures and was like, naw **** that.

can confirm. lots of mediocre new grads at big tech making ~$200k right out of a bachelor's. lots of engineering managers who pull ~$350k+ who basically sit in meetings all day and dont code anymore.

guy i knew was a power engineer he just goes to the washrooms and plays poker in a hospital and gets paid near 100k

but if **** hits the floor and needs figuring out then he says it goes from 0-100 idk

idk what he does, i think he overlooks the piping or whatever power engineers do. some maintenance thing. he used to work the oil pipes or fields or whatever the **** in alberta.

assume his job is like this. tells me he walks around with a clipboard doin jack **** lol

Yeah power engineer means something different in Canada than the US lol (power engineer in Canada is a trade, power engineer in US is somebody with at least a bachelors in EE). EE working in the power industry checking in. I work in consulting now and make great money but the job is stressful and the corporate culture is soul sucking. My dream is to get a few more years of experience, finish my MBA this year, and get a management job at a government-run energy organization.... hnnngh

I have that job and its not bad. There are days where i actually have to do some work but most of the time, it's making phone calls and waiting for something bad to happen.

I agree with OP fully, there is a level a lot of places where pay / responsibility ratio maxes out. Lots of 100k jobs without being a supervisor and to get the next 20k bump up you have to deal with exponential more chit.
