Name one great philosopher or Artist that is currently alive

Title.

I have been thinking about things today. There seems periods before us there were great philosophers and artists alive and creating Work but today it seems not many if any exist.

yea, they do. but it's def. different. i think population size has a huge effect too

i've had a similar discussion with "composers". doesn't seem like there are many composers like we're accustomed to from the past... but they might do movie scores now

a lot of those guys are famous cause the times they were in were rudimentary and they introduced "revolutionary" ways of thinking, but now there are so many processes as a byproduct of their efforts it's harder to create something "new"

there are tons of different mediums now too: computer/ digital artists/ animation, etc. , etc.

but i agree with you there doesn't seem to be as singular an influence as there used to be

Yeah the only composer I can think of that I could consider a Great composer would be John Williams but it is nothing revolutionary

I have felt for some time that we seem to be just recycling the same ideas over and over, particularly with fashion.

But I also think that artists are often not recognized as great while they are living.

I think Ai Wei Wei has a pretty impressive body of work.

I just happened to catch this story recently about Titus Kaphar and I liked what I saw. I think that he has a very personal perspective, but at the same time the emotional power of many pieces transcend tribal identity and reflect a shared experience of being human.

IMO the reason we don't see as 'many' is because we live in a time where it's easy to be hypercritical of someone due to greater information about the person and that makes them seem less intriguing.

Art is becoming digitized. You won't get many famous books and oil paintings in the 21st century.

yea, it's weird. i'd say art is more important, more used and proliferated than ever.. you could even call youtube thumbnails "art" in some way

there are tons and tons of artists here:

https://fineartamerica.com/

same thing here:

https://displate.com/

and i know there are many more. sites like etsy, etc.

maybe the internet has taken away from the recognition cause every lil person could have their piece of art purchased or used or something

whereas prior only the big names proliferated

there's more stuff like this:

web design, word press and theme creators, etc. tons

If there are any good philosophers right now, they've probably been cancelled ages ago and no one knows they exist. Some dikheads will invoke Chomsky sometimes, but he's dogchit.

Best artist in any field I can come up with is John Williams.
Maybe Quentin Tarantino too.

I'd say Jordan Peterson is one of the more intelligent people we have in the current day and age. I'm not as much into his philosophy as his social science background, but he is a philosopher.
