Dessert Porn from Dessert Person

Pies are out, sundry pastry is in.

My New Years resolution is to bake (with confidence!) my way through my favorite new cookbook, Dessert Person.

Poppy Seed Almond Cake

Flourless Chocolate Wave Cake

Blood Orange and Olive Oil Upside-Down Cake

Little disappointed in this one, but having poked around at other people's versions they look about the same, with slurry / bleed through issues. Still tasted great!

Salty Nut Tart with Rosemary

Almond Butter Banana Bread

Cont'd....

Seedy Maple Breakfast Muffins

Crispy Mushroom Galette

Soft and Crispy Focaccia with Garlic and Rosemary

What I'm most proud of... the Gâteau Basque, with brandied cherries and pastry cream. That crust was extremely tricky but it worked!

My final bake will be the Croquembouche, a tower of choux pastry filled creampuffs bound with whispy threads of caramel. Stay tuned!

I’m pretty disappointed at my perpetual inability to differentiate “desert” from “dessert”.
It really changed the meaning of this thread.

So proud of misc. The pie thread's first comment was creampies and I'm going to pretend like I don't know what you're talking about.

Hehe, just kidding! There are quite a few pie recipes in the book - the blackberry and caramel one I'll make first!

I don't like sweets so idk why I came into this thread, but I am leaving with a pleasant surprise, upon seeing what looks like.. not too sweet desserts?

They look good, OP, but no lemon meringue and no pumpkin pie, no care.

That's exactly it. Nothing cloyingly sweet, and quite a few nods in the savory division.

There's a caramelized honey pumpkin pie recipe that I'll make sure to knock out in the fall. And there's a preserved lemon meringue cake! Will that do?

In. Thoughts on how this measured up vs. lemon poppyseed?

I like bread w/rosemary, bread w/garlic, and bread w/olives, so I'm thinking that focaccia is a win.

Not gonna lie, came in thread to see people fuking in the sand.

But this still works. Question, who eats all these desserts? What motivated you to do all these recipes in a short period? I'd expect the ingredients to be expensive, did you buy in bulk?

Why exactly did you say "hey here's a book full of recipes, I'm gonna do all of them"?

Yum.

Rarely bake because I don't need it and a lot of stuff would go to waste. But if I wanted a descriptor I would call it a "keeping busy and not thinking" baking problem. Made three kinds of cookies to give away to neighbors on Christmas day. There's worse cope. And it made the house smell great.

Spoiler!

It was extremely almond-y, which I don't mind, but I think I prefer lemon poppyseed.

The focaccia is so great, and the author actually has a video if you want to try and make your own

It was freaking amazing. I couldn't believe how well the crust actually worked, and NO SOGGY BOTTOM!

They were both great. Surprisingly, the seedy muffins were one of my favorites. I made it for breakfast meal prep last week.

Everyone! Family, friends, neighbors. I bring them to meetings so everyone can enjoy them with coffee, or to my synagogue for Oneg Shabbat.

I do buy in bulk from Sam's but for the most part I already have a collection of what I need. For each recipe I may need to buy 2-3 special ingredients.

I want to be a better baker, and I think Claire has a great approach to teaching baking. There's even a difficulty:time matrix in the book so I know how to methodically progress.

Thank you! The crust was really finicky, just very thin and like most crusts, more difficult the more you work it. I had to reroll and stick it back in the fridge to firm back up a few times.

There's totally one of those cakes in the book! Actually several very happy looking birthday-type cakes!

Coffee Coffee Cake for dessert tonight, and yes I did have a corner piece for breakfast! It must have had at least 1/8 c instant coffee in the ribbon and dry mix and 1/2 cup of strong brewed coffee in the batter.
