I had this canvas prepped for a while so I finally bit the bullet and painted this scene over the weekend. It was different and lots of fun. I thought I'd share my process.

I created the 'underpainting' using black and white gesso and an old liner brush + a natural sponge. I used a filbert brush to make the rocks.



After that was dry completely, I added a thin layer of a Bob ross brand medium called liquid clear. It basically coats the canvas and makes it slick, making it much easier to add oil paint after. I decided to use a color combination of phthalo blue, sap green, and a bit of phthalo green. I wanted a forest feel.



I then added all of my oils and all the details. In the end, it was fun, but in hindsight I would have perhaps not covered up so much of the background. I liked the background. But I thought it came out okay. I'm still focusing on practicing my bush/tree highlight skills.

I don't have an etsy page. Honestly, I really only paint for myself. I just thought I'd begin sharing paintings I made here to encourage others to begin if they even had a flicker of desire to learn. I had no prior painting experience whatsoever 2 years ago and just learned by following along to episodes of the joy of painting, so I'm living proof anyone can do this.

I guess in the end I'm just spreading that message Bob always repeated on TV - "you can do this."

I don't have a Youtube channel and I really don't have the time to make these kinds of videos. However, there are a number of people on Youtube that create video tutorials in the wet on wet style. I'd encourage you to take a look. I learned a lot from them as well. Off the top of my mind, there is:

And, of course, the OG - Bill Alexander. During the initial months of the pandemic, a Youtube channel in his name released a bunch of old school Alexander art episodes. He taught Bob Ross the wet on wet technique. He's a fantastic guy to watch. Such a character too. Old WWII era German guy.

Etsy shoppers love stuff like this. If you were to take some good pictures and come up with decent painting names and descriptions of your paintings, the market Etsy caters to would easily spend $100+ on your work. Especially if you mention that it is a 1 of a kind. The main demographic on Etsy appears to be women and they love spending money on artsy things.

I sell T-shirts on Etsy and made almost 30k last year on the side selling them and most of my customers were women buying things for men. I can only imagine being able to produce and sell original work like paintings.

Also, here's another thing to consider... you've probably been to a restaurant or a place of business where art was hanging on the wall on consignment to sell. That model works too.

A pretty painting to someone who appreciates art is a pretty painting. The flaws you see are probably perfection to someone else.

Consider this as well, a place like Etsy gets traffic from all over the world. There's a high chance that there's a buyer out there somewhere who'd be willing to pay for something nice like this.

I've always been a really creative person. For as long as I can remember, I really loved writing stories or drawing things. But, I was never a good drawer at all. I gravitated more towards writing and then music, ultimately combining my love for both into songwriting. So, to answer your question, no - I would not consider myself naturally talented in the arts like drawing or painting. I also don't personally buy into this idea of innate talent. Bob Ross said many times that "talent is a pursued interest." If you like something enough, you'll do it over and over, developing your skills and become what could be construed as "talented."

I'd say anyone can do this. Here is the first ever painting I ever tried to make.



I find oil painting very intuitive and oils themselves are such a forgiving medium. It's hard to mess up irreparably. My initial trajectory was that I was going through some really stressful things and I began watching the joy of painting every night before bed to calm my mind and help me sleep. After doing that for many months, I started developing what I'd consider some kind of theoretical foundation. I began learning the numerous rules of wet on wet (i.e., a thin paint sticks to a thick paint). I then got a Bob Ross master paint kit that came with the necessary tools to create this painting and a DVD of the episode and I just went for it.
