What are the hardest sports?
What do people here think are the hardest sports? Hard as in physically demanding.
My thinking is something along the lines of:
Tier 1 (hardest) - Combat sports, such as boxing and MMA. Not only do you have to be fit, strong and skilled etc., but you have to contend with being hit/fighting.
Tier 2 - Contact sports where you are likely to get injured I.e hand egg (American football) and rugby.
Tier 3 - endurance sports such as Iron Man, marathons and long distance cycling (the tours). The physical pain that these guys go through for hours, sometimes days/weeks is unreal.
Tier 4 - Individual skilled, but hard, sports - think tennis, squash etc. They are hard work and you have no team members to help you out.
Tier 5 - Non/low contact team sports. Football (soccer), basketball, volleyball.
Tier 6 - Team sports where you just sit or stand around most of the time - baseball, cricket etc.
Tier 7 - sports that aren’t sports - golf, bowling, snooker.
I’m not really sure where I’d put motor sports. There is always the danger of crashing so maybe around 3/4?

Basketball. If you’re not like 6’8 or a one 1/100,000,000 athlete you have no shot.

from the sports i've participated in i'd say wrestling hands down. running up and down a field is one thing to be in shape for. going head to head with another person for multiple minutes a round is a whole other level of endurance thats needed
ever see what a highschool state champ or d1 wrestlers training looks like? pretty grueling

Real tough question. I’m thinking of it more of which sport is harder for an individual athlete.
A professional Olympic level marathon runner or professional triathlete might be the individually hardest in my opinion. The pace at which they run, the distance they have to maintain that pace, the physical toll on the body down to your organs, the mental toughness it takes, that’s a lot. It might be the hardest. But I wouldn’t say they would be the overall best athlete. But being the most athletic isn’t the question here, it’s figuring out what is the hardest.
Top tier professional fighter I think you have to be a more overall well rounded athlete. This will make the athlete Jack of all trades master of none (other than fight technique and strategy). So having to have developed and to utilize those facets while under an extreme stress makes it extremely hard.
I’m really kind of torn between marathon runner and professional fighter.

Bodybuilding is a lifetime journey, anytime spent not bulking or cutting is a waste of time.

Snooker or darts, and it’s not even close.
They are completely unlearnable. You can either play, or you can’t. Phil Taylor demolished his pub team the first time he played, he couldn’t understand why they bothered. Same with Ronnie O’Sullivan, better at 12 than I would be after a lifetime of practise.
I’ve tried to improve at both and I’m utterly convinced it wouldn’t matter what I did, I would barely ever win a single leg off Taylor and in a million years would never win a frame of snooker against a top player. That’s true of even good amateurs in both (which I’m not). The gap to the top is totally insurmountable, there are no other sports where the gap between good and all time great is so enormous.

Since you said physically demanding...
I think Basketball goes up to tier 2 or 3. The pace of the game is insane. Its one constant suicide drill and then you're asked to guard absolute monsters and be nice with your jumpshot. Hockey goes to tier 2.

Football you could just be fat and strong and make it pretty far.

There is no way in hell you can just, "pick up" hockey because you're looking for a new hobby.

The average person would be hospitalized after an NFL caliber hit. 100% injury rate, a lifetime of pain, and half these guys will have rotting cauliflower brains by the time they hit middle age.

No mention of hockey? Gotta balance on sharpened skates you could cut someones jugular with, resulting in playes moving way faster, all on cold, unforgiving ice. And then you can stop the game and engage in a fist fight. Not to mention you play holding weapons.

easily combat sports. where the target is the head or the round is until someone is knocked out or unable to fight anymore. one concussion or sparring itself could end your career or make you unable to continue the sport. like mike tyson said, "boxing is for people who have nothing." which is true for all combat sports. because you are gambling your entire life and well-being.
