My thinking is something along the lines of:

Tier 1 (hardest) - Combat sports, such as boxing and MMA. Not only do you have to be fit, strong and skilled etc., but you have to contend with being hit/fighting.

Tier 2 - Contact sports where you are likely to get injured I.e hand egg (American football) and rugby.

Tier 3 - endurance sports such as Iron Man, marathons and long distance cycling (the tours). The physical pain that these guys go through for hours, sometimes days/weeks is unreal.

Tier 4 - Individual skilled, but hard, sports - think tennis, squash etc. They are hard work and you have no team members to help you out.

Tier 5 - Non/low contact team sports. Football (soccer), basketball, volleyball.

Tier 6 - Team sports where you just sit or stand around most of the time - baseball, cricket etc.

Tier 7 - sports that aren’t sports - golf, bowling, snooker.

I’m not really sure where I’d put motor sports. There is always the danger of crashing so maybe around 3/4?
OP asked a great question, and provided an equally great answer. Well done - and wouldnt change MUCH of your list. Only things I disagree with:

- Hockey belongs tier 2.

- Basketball , soccer, and anything with incidental or occasional contact should be higher (maybe tier 4). Having played both, there is a BIG difference on toll on your body in a sport like basketball when you are guarding a 6'7 oak tree vs a sport like volleyball where there is no contact from the opposite team.

- Tennis should be tier 5. Nothing hard about that sport at all. Played varsity , and still compete in leagues - there's a reason why boomers can play tennis into their 60s. Fun sport, but not tough on body.

- Technical sports that are highly skilled and have injury risk or take hours to perfect. Skiing, ice skating, swimming/ diving. Would put these tier 4 because there are so many factors to it, and none of it is innate. These are also generally pretty niche so even harder to get good at

Baseball, golf, bowling are not sports at all and is just a way for fatasses to entertain themselves before dying of diabetes at 60

Hardest contact sport is probably AFL, way harder than NFL lol, play for nearly 2 hours non-stop, no padding etc. watch it on youtube if you never have

They are completely unlearnable. You can either play, or you can’t. Phil Taylor demolished his pub team the first time he played, he couldn’t understand why they bothered. Same with Ronnie O’Sullivan, better at 12 than I would be after a lifetime of practise.

I’ve tried to improve at both and I’m utterly convinced it wouldn’t matter what I did, I would barely ever win a single leg off Taylor and in a million years would never win a frame of snooker against a top player. That’s true of even good amateurs in both (which I’m not). The gap to the top is totally insurmountable, there are no other sports where the gap between good and all time great is so enormous.
Love watching Darts and Snooker brah checking in.

Just about anyone without physical handicap can train and do MMA, Boxing, Wrestling, Football, Basketball, gymnastics, etc. You may not be world class but you will be capable of playing a game/match/fight at a low level and completing it.

Completing an Iron Man/ultra Triathlon is a whole nother animal entirely. Assuming you are an average guy and aren't an accomplished endurance athlete you're going to need to dedicate your life to training/preparing for about 3 years before you even attempt it. Lets say you spend three years preparing. Diet on point entire time. Never miss a training day. On track and doing everything correctly. The chances of you actually successfully making it on your first attempt is low. Which is why a lot of people do many half iron mans first.

I grew up doing wrestling, martial arts, boxing, etc. Yes it sucks to get hit and you can get hurt. Yes its physically taxing. But I also know guys that amateur fights/matches after only training for 3-6 months. And it wasn't even a big deal for them.
I respect TRI athalons and Iron Mans because it requires excellence across 3 different sports.

On the other hand ULTRA marathons and Marathons are overrated. If grandma can do it then it's impressive, but not special. Also if you know any distance runners they 99% of the time look like they never stepped foot into a gym a day in their life. Distance running training is a joke since you focus only on one thing - running. And once you reach a steady pace there really is no difference between mile 10, mile 15, and so on. Sprinters at least need to hit the weight room, focus on speed, etc.

Of course this just is talking about average people playing the various sports. Those that compete to win marathons or can do it sub 2 is absurd and hats off to them. But marathon running is literally one of the least skilled things you can do

No doubt it would be difficult to compete in triathlons but you're still dealing with (mostly) controlled circumstances. It's the unpredictability of facing another human with equal fighting ability who's intent on beating the piss out of you that I think puts fighting in a different class.

Rugby > American Football. If you've ever played Rugby, you'd know the amount of strength and agility a player needs.

Although I agree with the brah who said Hockey. It takes a lot of finesse just to handle yourself on skates, let alone control a puck afterwards.

He said ultra tri's.

Regular tris really arent THAT difficult - most in shape people can get there in 18 months. Really just depends how long it takes to become proficient at swimming.

Lol, the best rugby players would be lucky to make an NFL practice squad. If a starting NFL linebacker for some odd reason wanted to go make way less money and go play Rugby, they would instantly be one (of if not the most) athletic players in rugby.

Is hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me. you need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But you need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill you. Oh yeah, did I mention that this whole time you're standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick? Is ice hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me

Skateboarding. The tricks are hard af to learn. It's physically demanding to do. Normies hate you for skating on their property and for being a skateboarder in general. The skate scene is filled with degenerates. There isn't a ton of money in the sport relative to mainstream sports. The injuries are brutal.

Boxing is the hardest overall

If how long a match lasts for isn't a factor mma is the hardest

If we count the training leading up to a match d1 wrestling is the hardest

I skated for years and yes when you see the actual size of the gaps and handrails the pros jump it's insane but again these are controlled scenarios. The stairs or or rail isn't going to suddenly move on you at the last second and you can practice your way up to bigger stuff. Being locked in a cage with a human who can think and react to what you're doing means all the training and practice in the world can't ever totally replicate that.

I played both and rugby is 1000% more physically demanding. Hitting is one thing but not the end-all, be-all. And besides if you did a flying shoulder hit with no pads you're gonna dislocate your shoulder in no time. There's an extra element of skill in rugby.

Lets be honest. THE BIGGEST barrier to being good at golf is $. Period. If you dont have a rich dad or make 6 figures you wont get green time. No one becomes great at anything without lots of practice.

No.. I’m decent at golf, probably top 1% ish, and can occasionally beat a couple of senior pro’s I play with. Take a top 1% snooker player, or darts, he would never get near a top pro in even the shortest match.. golf is a learnable skill with a lot of technique. Snooker and darts simply arent. Ridiculously difficult

In the olympics power walking is one of the hardest.

Of the sports I've played for fun or on a team I thought basketball and tennis the most physically and mentally demanding. They can be kind of insane with some local tennis tournaments. You can play 3 or 4 matches in a day, from sunup to sundown, lasting over a holiday weekend to get to the finals.

Boxing is king.
Easily ahead of MMA because you need elite level endurance to go 12 rounds.

Also football and basketball is above sports such as volleyball.
Real Madrid, Miami Heat, New York Jets.

The hardest non-contact sport is gymnastics, hands down!!
Fact: My first-generation uncle was a boxer who fought Sugar Ray Robinson! He also fought in the war, sacrificing the career he deeply loved, so people could have the right to freedom.
