Question about musicians here

I'm asking guys who play real musical instruments here, so if you don't **** off



How long does it take to learn a music instrument? I'm 23 years old and for the past year or so I've been crazy about drums, how they sound,how they work, everything. Personally I always loved hearing drums in songs the most bam bam bam bam it's sooooo good sounding!

So any of you would you tell me would it be a good idea for me to maybe "chase" some form of career in music or just play for fun? Now I'm not looking to be some multi millionaire music artist lmao but Idk it would be cool to get some cash playing in a band in bars and so.

To be able to physically play most songs? 4 years, 30 min/day

To play pretty much any song in existence with a high degree of proficiency? 10 years, 2hr/day.

You could probably get into a decent bar band after 5 years, 1 hr/day.

lol idk what to do. I was thinking of getting a degree and going towards either fitness or catering/tourism. Im studying foreign languages and I was trying to apply that in one of these categories but drumming and playing in a band,bonding,having fun sounds really good. Idk

Keep in mind that most bands aren't actually...good. You can have a lot of fun with other people without being amazing at your instrument.

depends largely on your passion and dedication.

there's a point of diminishing returns. i.e. if you practice more than 2 or 3 hours a day you'll probably get bored/fatigued or both

but assuming you put in 3hrs a day, 5 days a week, you'd be pretty good in a 1year, and very good in 3-5yrs

source: ive been playing guitar since i was 7, but i stopped trying to get better after about 18. now i just play for fun

since about august 2019 I've been watching youtube clips of drumming,drummers I have two sticks and I've been air swinging to songs for about 1.5 hours every day. I can't get drums because I don't have place for them in apartment (I live with my parents). I've been thinking of buying drums and having them in this one place I had in mind.

to start is never to late. to become a master or make high money on it then yeah youre a bit to late. 23 and just learning... you'll have bands with members who've been playing since they were young teens and know the game.

well yeah if you dont have space you're fukked. if you're set on drums then just read drum theory books so you'll at least know what you are doing when you get a kit. that'll help you

Sounds like you have an obsession for drum, GOOD! That means you'll put in the work to get decent/ good.
You will improve fast in the beginning and then stall. That's okay because that's where you'll grind hard and get better and better.
As for as a career in it, you can definitely find a band and have week end gigs here and there. Be willing to play any style of music, some band will pay you just to have a drummer to keep a steady beat.
In my experience, being able to coordinate 4-5 people together to play IS the hardest thing to do. Everyone has their own agenda, some member take it more seriously than others and things start to fizzle out quick.

Good luck! It's going to be worth it though, EVERYONE wishes they had music skills.

Hey man I'm a drummer, been playing about 15 years now. I have a full time job but my band is semi serious, we'd play overseas enough and have a decent status. I'd highly recommend being involved in music, even for the social side of it.

Honestly once you learn your first drumbeat you can play 90% of songs. You'd be in a band in no time. After a year of playing you'd be pretty proficient. Try and source some drum teachers in your area to show you the basics.

I just have to find a job that will help me propel myself into a career I wish to make in the future. Either fitness gym instructor (where I intend to become fitness instructor for foreign athletes) or catering where I wish to work in tourism with tourists in hotel and then sign up for some drum classes to maybe learn something and maybe play something on the side as a side hustle. I work in a pastry shop but I'll never move up here,toxic coworkers and I'm not that good at it (I like the pay and there are tourists) It's just hard due to this pandemic to find something what I want (gyms
are closed too) . It's 2021 and I believe this is the year that could determine the rest of my life. It's scary but very exciting.

simon phillips very nice CV, great associations and a jazz drummer so you know he knows his stuff. My personal favorite is Phil Rudd of ACDC. His metronomic style of play is unbelievable, but it's not only that he keeps the beat going that is impressive in my opinion it's HOW he plays it. It has that feel to it I guess you need to have that special ear to really understand his way of playing. It's amazing. I also love Lars even though he might try to overthink too much. You can't knock off what he did with Metallica and I know he pisses us fans a lot lol

well good luck to ya....you dont need expensive drums to sound good, replace the chitty heads and put some good Remo or Evans on them and they will sound great.

You can even get aerodrums if you don't have a place for a kit or a roland but won't be the same as the real thing.
Some of the most popular songs are quite easy that goes for most instruments.
If you really love it and put in the time great things can happen in a year

It depends on your natural talent. Generally-speaking, it's easier to reach an intermediate level with drums than it is with most other instruments.

Instruments and learning them comes in waves.

Your first month, you’ll learn basics and over the next 4-5 months you’ll excel quickly.

Then from around 6 months in to the next 6 months, you’ll hit a wall.

After that you’ll excel quickly again from year 1 to the 3rd year. From there, you’ll hit a wall again that’ll take years to get through.



It’s truly Dunning-Kruger. After a year or two of playing you’re really confident and think you’re great. Then you run into someone that’s truly great and you’ll spend the next 5 years figuring out how beginner you really were. Frustrating and rewarding.





Fact is, after a month or two, you’ll be able to play. Go for it, it’s a great instrument.
