Question for the misc cops. I'm becoming a cop this year once my department figures out my class start date amidst this CV ****. My question is aside from CLEET and POST what other certs do you guys have? I want to broaden my skill set as much as possible so I can make more money and raise rank quickly. I also plan to get back into martial arts and such again. I currently lift more bodybuilder style. Do any of y'all train more explosively or what is your training regiment like? Ronnie used to be a cop, but his big ass couldn't run after mofos after a couple of Olympias. This is my first thread on the misc don't pepper me too hard sons.

Wouldnt worry about broadening chit and just worry about getting through your FTO.

If you think certs are what gets you rank youre mistaken pal. PD, SO's & the SP's are uber f****** political and its people skills and who you rub shoulders with that hold 10x the weight of any cert.

Not a troll post. I'm legit trying to explore my options and learn about maximizing my money and career gains. My department gives us like an extra $75 a month on our checks for having our bachelor's. I have mine and of course $75 is a ****ty incentive to make guys go to school. I plan on finishing my second bachelor's and master's anyways.

read books on investigations as thats what is going to make you stand out the most at first, maybe a book on community policing, then before trying to get rank read and learn the appropriate supervisor book with study material and questions.

Honestly the first two will get you noticed ontop of working hard and actually DOING the work, know the policies at the department, and CONTRIBUTE, most police admin like people who have initiated programs, lead programs with the community or within the department, and shown leadership at work, then read the supervisor book to be able to do well in the oral board for getting rank.

In bigger cities its usually about testing into rank when you're eligible and having a good history, in small departments its a lot more about when someone actually leaves/promotes up and seniority and if they even WANT to promote from within and not just hire someone outside the agency.

Baby steps. Focus on the academy first. Then focus on making it through PTO/FTO. Then focus on doing solid work while you learn the job. Then start focusing on specialized areas.

Leave the name dropping out, trust me on this. You want to make your own name and have people say you got where you are because you do good work, not because of who your dad was. We get second generation officers often at my dept. One of the former chiefs had 2 sons on the dept. One made his own name and it was talked about. The other rode daddy's coattails and that was also talked about

Just be a hard worker and stay positive at the academy/FTO/patrol. Show up, smile, do a good job - which is really pretty easy. Don't get lazy or salty.

If you don't have a degree, get one. If you have one, get a better one.

Once you're on your own you can put in for trainings, your POST portal will have a nice list of all the POST approved training courses which are the ones that matter. Find an area you like and gain expertise in that area - for me it's SWAT / shooting / instructor stuff. I'll never be the guy that knows all the CVCs, local homeless people, etc, but I can handle those calls fine, that's just not the cop I am. If you're a jack of all trades, you're probably a master of none, find something to master while being capable of everything else.

Get involved at the PD. Go to the work events, go to the fun events. Be a good team player and be one of the guys. Be the guy that stays late on their own time to help out co-workers with a late call. This starts in the academy with helping the guys that are struggling instead of being focused on your own studying (as long as you aren't struggling). Go to community events, coffee with a cop, toys for tots, flag ceremonies, etc. Follow the local city community pages on fb (like the buzz) or next door app just to stay aware of what's going on in the community.

For physical fitness stuff, foot pursuits are more like HIIT than anything else. Looking big will automatically make people assume you're capable though, so you're off to a good start if you look like you lift.

which one got rank and more pay though? I have seen people ride their dad's or family members coat tails and rank and make money, who really gives a chit what people at work say if you're the one making money and getting promoted tbh.

Good advice. My recruiter already knows about the LE in my family and actually told me I should've mentioned it more during my interview. My uncle told me he has some buddies who will be instructing us that he's already told about me so the name dropping has already started, but my uncle is the one who initiated it. I'm with Jestbrah though honestly, if using my uncle's influence will help me promote and get paid then **** it. My hard work will just make him look that much better for sponsoring me.

I'm a lovable a-hole in my daily already. I genuinely want to work with my community so I'll only fck with people who fck with me or my boys.

Did you already do all of the testing, backgrounds, etc? I did everything up until the background investigation, which is supposed to be next. This covid stuff is making it such a longer process. It's already been almost a year to date since my application.

I'm literally done with everything bro. I'm just waiting on them to pick another start date for my class. CV bull **** keeps delaying everything.
