Anyone else think it's crazy we teach Sex Ed in schools but not things like HomeEcon?

Nothing against sex education at all either. It just seems that in the hierarchy of important life skills things like basic finances, preparing taxes, cooking, handyman skills, etc would be more beneficial.

it's fukin shocking how many people can't cook anything more than a box of mac and cheese, kids need to be taught those basic life skills but there's more money in "college prep"

Who needs basic skills needed to be an adult when life is all about sticking stuff in your butt.
Eat in a deficit to lose weight.
Hit your protein and fat minimums to stay healthy and keep your gainz.
Lift heavy and do HIIT to look and feel awesome.
Use the internet to learn why you should do these things and how to do these things.

I took a stock market class, that life education class where you get a fake baby that cries, some class that had a lot of basics about finances and you played a simulation game where you get a basic income and have to manage your expenses etc.

You are saying these are not being taught in school anymore?

My kids take 3 years of Home EC and Engineering in Middle school. They offer business, architecture, engineering, and culinary classes in High School. Small conservative town ftw.

Took home ec, 2 years of woodshop, and a computer class that included HTML. They also had an auto repair class and just put in CAD classes with machinery right after I graduated. Anyone leaving high school not prepared is a moron.

nothing against sex ed but if you look at the history, it was based on the false premise that back then teenage/unwanted pregnancy and teenage parenthood was a huge problem decimating society. they also wanted to take the decision-making and responsibility of the family unit on the grounds that parents couldn't teach them about sexual education. somewhere along the way, sex education became weaponized for other purposes besides for what it was intended to be which ended up breaking down the family unit and voila here we are in 2021, where unwanted pregnancies are an actual problem, more children than ever before are born out of wedlock, higher proportion of teenagers are having babies and more single parent households than ever before.

I remember home ec in school, couldn’t stand that damn teacher. I had to write lines in detention because we weren’t allowed to say shut up to anyone and that was one of my favourite things to say to idiots.

I'm glad YOU went to a good school where YOU got to take those courses.

Sex Ed is a part of almost all children's education if they go to public school with the option to opt out.

Home Econ is not a part of many children's education in public schools unless they opt in. Assuming the schools even offer courses and the teachers teach it.

There's a lot wrong with how schools are ran. I know mine tried pushing us towards the most "elite" university we could get into whether or not it was affordable and trade schools were never presented as a valid path. We had woodshop and home ec as electives but really nothing about finances or general handyman skills.

That was 10+ years ago. Can't imagine the clownery that's going on these days. Genders studies and white man bad classes everywhere I assume.

No it makes perfect sense. They want more uneducated morons because uneducated morons consume stupid things like doordash food delivery services, tax preparation services, handyman services to fix minor issues, buy **** food, etc... and vote for our terrible politicians.

Naturally they want these uneducated morons to breed more uneducated morons. Could you imagine the backlash if your average person was financially literate? Just look at social security. Anyone who can do math can see it's the worst investment return outside of an actual ponzi scheme (because it is one). If your average person was able to think critically, amass any degree of wealth and have life skills instead of watching braindead TV while eating a big Mac that was delivered for a $15 upcharge there'd be a revolution in months.

Schools are a training ground for the basic needs capitalists feel that feed the economy, regardless of whatever delusional Marxist fantasies rightoid lunchbox misc propagates, and with the shifting of American capitalists' interests, so goes the school system.

As long as libraries remain a thing, I have no problem expecting adults to teach themselves the most basic survival skills. What I have a larger issue with are universities awarding degrees for Marriage & Family Studies and the like. Not that those are not noble life choices, but Debra doesn't need a participation degree to pop out a tater tot casserole.

A couple of interesting books on the topic: Varieties of Historical Interpretation and the Foundations and Development of American Education and Schooling in Capitalist America: Educational Reform and the Contradictions of Economic Life.

Yes, albeit at more religiously affiliated schools, mostly a Liberty, BYU, etc. State schools usually run it under Human Development and Family Studies or a similar moniker.

Preparing taxes, cooking, and budgeting are all easy af basic skills that don't need to be taught in school. It's absurdly easy to do all of these things, it makes me chuckle when I hear my little sister complaining about how in school they learn nothing useful and don't know how to file taxes when filing a w-2 is one of the simplest adult tasks.

My public high school had elective home economics as well as mandatory personal finance and constitutional law. U mad, bro?

Imagine my confusion when I moved to NYS and took philosophy of law in a SUNY school and everybody's like "uhhh what is a precedent".

Do they not have Home Ec classes anymore? When I was in 7-8 in Junior High it was offered but I took Ceramics and Woodshop instead. Home Ec was mostly girls.

I taught myself to cook. I had a decent rice cooker/steamer I used for meat/veg/rice but my idiot dad threw out a part that was sitting on the table that needed to be cleaned. I want to get another but for now I just use basic stainless pots and pans.

I can cook rice, saute veg, bake or roast either whole or cut chicken, bone in or boneless skinless, spaghetti, eggs either scrambled fried or omelette, potato wedges which I usually cook with the chicken unless it's a whole chicken. Salsa, guacamole, oatmeal pancakes. Oatmeal with banana and and egg mixed in, or maybe some berries. Fried rice.

I'm no master chef but yea cooking is fun though I'm kinda lazy with it these days.

I'd like to learn to bake, I made some boxed brownies way back in the day but It'd be nice to make some from scratch. Some cornbread or non-dairy brownies or cookies would be good.
I have sampled every language and French is my favorite to curse in.

Somewhat this. Teen pregnancy was just as much of a problem back then as it is today. The last I checked it has got slightly better, not worse.




But I agree with you wholeheartedly. All this stuff, how to cook, sex Ed, how to change your oil, how to manage your finances etc. Should all be taught to you by your parents. Your nuclear family unit.

Everyone (well I should say the young and the left) wants the government to be responsible for everything. But the truth is, your parents should be responsible for all of these things.

But there’s no pride anymore. People would rather demand that their child is entitled to a free lunch at school than make them their own lunch. Really the parents should be embarrassed that their kid has to eat government slop, but their not. And all of those friends are eating the same crap too.


Not having kids out of marriage, and restoring the strength of the nuclear family would solve 90% of this country’s problems.

But instead intellectuals want to demonize the family unit and have everyone sucking off the government teet.


It actually breaks my heart, because there is so much more pride and joy and self worth in overcoming obstacles to make a better life for yourself, that no one could ever take away from you But instead the masses are served this line of crap that “life isn’t fair” and “no one has a fair shot”, so you mine as well give up and never try. So the masses eat it up and “demand change” instead of making their own lives better

I took a year of home ec. Wood working. Multiple programmings. And drafting.

All electives though, so most don’t. I know how to sew, cook, crochet etc. okay with basic car stuff and if I don’t know how to do things I pick it up quickly.

That said, I went out of my way to learn. Nothing was required
