Misc PhD's in parenting GTFIH
As the father of a 1 year old child I only want for him to be raised as competently as possible to be the best he can be.
About to go down the rabbit hole of all Dr Gabor Maté content.
Is this the way?

Jumping into this thread.
I’ve been thinking a lot of how I want to raise my kid, the type of father that I’ll be, what I want to teach them and how I’m going to them.
Leading by example is the most obvious. But being a strong leader in all facets of life, and especially at home is really important.

I'm not a PhD and only have one kid who is 1.5 years old myself, but fwiw I think the way to be the best father you can be is to remember that your role is to provide protection and guidance so your kid can grow up be who they want to be. Help them figure out who that is.
Too many people think your role is to raise your kid into the person you want them to be. It's not.
Definitely be a good role model, but I don't going non traditional parenting ideas are really worth considering.

I can't be bothered watching the video. But I would say the most important thing I ever learned and the one bit of advice I would pass on is that kids come out destined to be a certain sort of person and beyond extreme cases there is not much you can do about it. The sooner you accept this and learn to love the kid you got instead of the one you wanted or the one you expected, the happier both of your lives will be.

For example, child soldiers, jihads, etc were nurtured into being that way. I highly doubt these same children/people would have become such raised in a happy home.

Thanks to all for the good advice but I think I'm just going with this.

There's a poem I can't think of that describes parenting as us being the bow them the aarow, you aim and shoot hoping it lands true
Edit:
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

- Would you rather have your son be a failure, homeless druggie, but says he loves you.
or
- Have your son be a success, self sufficient, and well adjusted, but says he hates you?

wow! im only at 2:05 and he talks about babies crying, and how that is the baby picking up stress from the mom. When my niece was a newborn all she did was cry, cry. I said thats not healthy. 14 years later, for the 3rd time she was just put into a long term facility....my entire family is not "normal". Myself and my sister never had a good upbringing because of my parents.....and it shows...

What kind of childhood trauma leads to grown men wearing so many bracelets and rings?
