Still no power, but I did get a room reservation for tonight. Asked if I could reserve two or three nights and then cancel if I don't need them.
Negative.
Said hotel is at full capacity and no cancellations will be honored.
It took some time. Some hotels give no answer and some you are just stuck with a busy signal.

I think some hotels are probably down too which could explain having such a tough time finding one.
This one is farther than I would prefer to drive right now, but it is a newer build right next to city hall and the PD. I'm hoping hospitals and munis get some priority.
ETA: one of my biggest dislikes about this house is that it doesn't have gas service. I much prefer a gas stove and the heat pump is old. My brother peeked in the attic last night because the heat pump wasn't working, blowing cold air. Says there is a lot of snow in the attic. We were using space heaters, but so much for that.

In Grand Prairie. Power hasn't gone out at all, but I sure see lots of reports about it.
My whole neighborhood is on gas heaters, so hopefully they leave us alone when it comes to electricity.
I have a generator on standby and a few space heaters if we do need em.
Yes, leave faucets dripping. Hot and cold lines.

Our power grids are very susceptible. I'm in the Midwest and these temps aren't that out of the ordinary and the local power distributor sent out an email to use the least amount of power possible (people should be doing this anyway), but we shut down a nuclear plant a few years ago just because people are anti-nuclear. Would have came in pretty handy right about now. With so many businesses shut down and corporations dark, I don't see how there is such a shortage of power. Most homes are gas heated, but the blowers do command a lot of power I suppose.
There's plenty of options for portable gas heat that can heat an entire room easily, but good luck finding one now.

We're supposed to get hit again on wednesday. 5 inches of snow still sitting on the road and highs are in 20s so they're probably not gonna melt so 3 more inches will shut down the entire northern part of texas lol
Trust me, I am a pharmacist.

Does Texas not have the infrastructure to support the power consumption happening because of the cold?

I’ve been through enough hurricanes and I know not having a generator sucks ass. Got rid of the 7k portable for a whole home standby a couple years ago. I’m spoiled, lol. No running all those dam extension cords through the house.

Just got settled into the hotel and eating something. Brought a few groceries from the house (soup, bread/lunchmeat, snacks).
Glad that I did.
When I called to make a reservation this morning I asked for 2 queens. Got here and all they had was 1 King. Sold out. Took it anyway. Brother is getting stuck w/the recliner because my daughter and I get the bed.
Front desk phone was ringing constantly with people looking for a room. Per the desk they believe all hotels in the area are full.
After I got my daughter and brother in the room I went back out to try and find something a little better to eat and some bedding for my brother. Wal-mart closed; no power. Target no power, open but not selling any perishable food products. Haven't seen any restaurants open.
If a lot of grocers and restaurants have to toss all of their food + lot of home owners end up doing the same there may not be much variety available for a minute.
Before we came to the hotel my brother wanted to at least try to get enough of a generator to help keep the plumbing from freezing. He had called Ace and knew they were sold out. Went to Home Depot. Open, but on back up power/emergency lights and no heat. Said all their generators for sale or rent were gone by 9 AM.

I feel for you. Those temperatures are not uncommon here, but if your house ain't built for it and your power grid can't keep up with the power usage then that sounds rough...
Proper clothing sounds like the solution, the key is to trap warm air to your body. A normal way to do this is to use wool underwear, some thicker cloth of wool or fleece over that then some cloth that keeps the warm air trapped.
The reason why wool is so effective is that it will keep you warm even if your wet.
If you don't got warm cloth then you need to become creative, I've heard bubble wrap is effective vs hypothermia.
Edit: Grats with the hotel, good luck to the rest of you.
