I wouldnt tell them this, but Id keep the rent and give it back when they eventually buy a place.

my kids will be in college when they are 18. i still would not kick them out at 22/23. they need time to move up in their careers so they make decent money and dont have to live the poverty life of sharing apts etc

I had my own studio at my parents house when i moved out at the age of 23 with my 2 year old daughter and girl friend . I never looked back as a matter of fact that studio has remained vacate over 20 years Ded fukn srs

What's more important is what you do with the money. If my parents took $2000 rent from me every month, and they kept it in a savings accounting. I would disown them.

You have to invest it, if you are going to do that. Might as well throw it under the mattress.

What if they need a Master's or PhD for their engineering degree?

Would that be ok with you? They would probably be in school until 28 or 30 possibly.

Not sure, but I def wouldn't do what my parents did to me:

- tell my kid that if they enroll in college they can stay with me and pay rent while going to school
- after kid spends money on tuition, inform them they will indeed need their own place because I am moving
- encourage my kid to get apt they cant afford with un-trustworthy HS buddy.

i guess thats fine. i'd hope that i didnt completely fail my children and they'd go to med/dental school instead of engineering though.

Got kicked out at 18 during recession, really thankful for it at this point. I had a summer job at the time so wasn't totally ****ed. Basically if you haven't raised your kid to be useless, they should be fine.

If they were going straight into college from HS I would still kick them out, but pay their tuition and buy them a ****ty car if they haven't saved up enough. They should have to take out loans or find a PT job to pay for rent/expenses. Otherwise they won't learn the value earning money. Would probably help them pay off student loans after they grad.

Depends on where you live. If you live in NY, CA, Florida, or Texas. These are the absolute best places to make a career for yourself.

They are also the most expensive if you live in CA and NY where rent floats between $2000 and $3000 a month.

Even then some people won't learn. My coworker when I worked fast food at the time. Blew his entire grant money on a down payment for a brand new car.

You can still find shared rentals/rooms for much less than that outside of downtown areas.

Yes but that's if you don't mind driving 1 or 2 hours to get to work.

The best you can do is find a 1 bedroom, but it will still cost you $1000 a month with 3 roommates and little to no privacy. Any more roommates would be illegal.

Okay, but what job are they driving into downtown for? Always blows my mind hearing people commute that far to work for $10 or even $15/h. Those same jobs are in the suburbs as well.

I'm in a notoriously expensive city and you can find private rooms for $6-800 that are ~30-60 mins from downtown on public transit.

No idea. Even on reddit, you have idiots "Reverse commuting" from the city (where I'm assuming low wage and high wage jobs are plentiful) to the suburbs.

I means even then it's not uncommon. I know people from Temecula driving all the way down to San Diego to work at the mall and restaurant work.

I'm just saying screwing your children over isn't the best idea. Just to teach them hard work. The only time it wouldn't bother them is most likely if they don't care about ever owning a home.

I live in SD. Lots of people drive from the city to places like Poway or people from Oceanside drive into the city to work.
