Been selected for a new job role, mixed feelings. Accept or nah?

Current role. Standard factory production operator.

4 days on, 4 days off. 2 x 12 hour days then 2 x 12 hour nights.
Repetitive, boring but no stress.
No progression opportunities
No training opportunities
Current salary. Base - £20k(ish) with an extra 33% shift premium. Brings me in about £27k a year with no overtime.
Overtime.... I do a chit ton of it as we are saving for a house. Deposit nearly there now though so will wind down on the extra hours. This year I will have earned about £37k gross.

New role. Quality and food safety technologist.

9-5, monday to friday.
Probably challenging and busy
Much more opportunity to progress
Will be able to partake in extra training
Salary....??? With no overtime opportunity.

I actually really enjoy my current shift pattern, not so much early starts but having 4 days off is a blessing. Only having a standard weekend will hit me quite hard I think... but I will also get every evening and weekend with my Husband (who also does 9-5).

So they have approached me numerous times over the last day or so, the job should be salaried at no more that £26k. I have told them explicitly that I couldn’t even consider it at less than £29k, he said he “will see what he an do”. He has now emailed me to ring him tomorrow. Unsure how it will go. He seems keen on me being the person for this job, which is flattering but potentially misplaced haha.

I don’t really care that much for progression, but also don’t want to be working in a hot, noisy factory until I am 70...

What would you guys do? Take the financial hit and go onto a less favourable work pattern with more responsibility for the potential to open new future opportunities, or stick to the boring devil you know that pays well and gives me loads of time off but probably sink my chances of being offered a new role again for a while?

I suck at negotiating and hate being put on the spot so am dreading this call tomorrow where I will probably have to make a decision.

so you get a chance to not be a tradie and you are confused what you should do?

I guess that’s true. Just kills me a bit that I would be doing more work, have more responsibility, less time off.... for less pay.

If I was making less than $40k USD / year and had a vagina, I'd be looking for ways to sell that. Just sayin'...

I will tell you this, if you turn it down then forget about ever getting another opportunity at that place.

If you want to be upwardly mobile in life, grab opportunities when they come and do your best with them.

Thanks, I live in a very rural area so not too much job opportunities around here. I do not need to chase a higher income, my husband and I both earn over the national average. Our wages are very similar so we pull in over £60k a year between us. For a couple with no kids, that’s a fairly comfortable living in our part of town tbh.

I just don’t want to be stressed, I don’t want to think/worry about work stuff when I am not on the job and I don’t want work to bleed into my home life. Work-to-life balance is far more important to me.

I just fear I may be trading that in for the chance of something that I don’t even really need, if I accept this new job.

Had a phone conversation with the manager, he didn’t give me a salary figure but did state that he wouldn’t want me to be put in financial hardship and urged me to apply. He also said that from his observations, he thinks I would be a really good fit.

So I am currently updating my CV, as we need to have it attached to officially apply for internally advertised roles.

Been a while since I have had to do a CV, does everyone still lie on theirs or is that frowned upon now?

You will 1000% regret it if you only get 2 days off SRS. I went from 2 day weekends to 3 at my current job and it's a night and day difference. You will absolutely hate having to work 5 days a week regardless of how good or bad the job is.

That’s literally my main worry. 4 on - 4 off is a blast. I am hoping that if I hate it then I can just step back into the factory and be back on shifts. But that might just be wishful thinking.

So he groomed you. I'd refuse or ask for 42k.
I don't know exactly what this new job is but it's unappealing. Work on something you really like.
