Am i understanding this right? So on top of ****ing up horrifically the power they are supplying is marked up exponentially?

It is very hit and miss depending on available power and staff. My brother found a pizza place open last night. Today I saw a Dunkin Donuts that was open and a Mexican restaurant which we went to for lunch. They had very few staff- just one server. I've heard of a McDonald's being open and a couple of Whataburgers running reduced hours w/short staff.

I also found a Tom Thumb today that was still selling perishables (refrigerated/frozen/meat/deli).

Read now that we may have continued outages through Friday.
The leader of a North Texas electrical cooperative warned that power blackouts that have plagued Dallas-Fort Worth for days could continue through Friday — even as the region braces for more snowfall.

“If you’re in the rolling blackouts, it’s not going to stop. It’s probably going to be this way for a few more days, unless something changes at the grid level,” Darryl Schriver, president and chief executive officer of Tri-County Electric Cooperative, said in a video posted on the group’s ******** page.

Tri-County delivers electricity in 16 Texas counties, and has customers in cities such as Azle, Granbury and Keller. It provides electrical power delivery to some areas in North Texas not served by the largest deliverer, Oncor.

ETA: Just saw that the Fort Worth boil water notice area expanded quite a lot.

With a major treatment plant offline, the system quickly lost pressure, and the city issued a boil water advisory for more than 210,000 customers, almost the entire northern third of Fort Worth. Several smaller cities purchase water from Fort Worth and are also without water: Haslet, Keller, Lake Worth, Northlake, Roanoke, Saginaw, Southlake, Trophy Club and Westlake.

The affected area is roughly bounded on the west by the city of River Oaks, Lake Worth and Eagle Mountain Lake. The southern boundary is almost to Northside Drive. The eastern boundary is the city limits.

Wish I had some fabulous advice to help you out. Only thing I can offer is, I saw once online how to make an indoor heater using an upside down clay pot, a few bricks and some tea light candles. In a freezing pinch it’d be better than nothing.

It’s weird, we haven’t lost power once , my parents who are 6 miles away have rolling blackouts

Thank you. And thanks to others who have made practical suggestions who I may have missed.

I'm okay for now, but some other posters ITT haven't been as fortunate. A candle stove might help.

About to turn in and just heard we are being told to expect an increased amount of outages due to the winter storm forecast to begin soon. They said that "hundreds of thousands have gone 36+ hours without power". Saying Grapevine has had more extended outages than some areas.

And I found a list of some open restaurants. Not sure how current it may be.

Not to put anyone down, but there are some things you need to have. A chainsaw and a generator. I live in the country sort of, or at least far enough away that the power goes out more fequently, and when it does sometimes it takes several hours to a few days for them to get it back on, and if a tree falls in the road or something it's going to be a while until the county comes and clears it. Having a few days of food supplied, even a water purification system, it can come in handy and you may never need it but when you do need it, it's really great to have.

I have a small 1400/2000W generator, can pick up and move easily. Under $500 and has really come in handy. Now I want to upgrade to one that I can plug up and run the whole house. Those units that automatically come on when your power goes out and you don't even have to connect anything are great but a bit too rich for my blood but you can get one where you disconnect from the main breaker and connect the generator and fire it up.

If you are stuck with no heat for a long haul stay in the smallest room you have and keep the door closed as much as possible.

Your body puts off a lot of heat, a few bodies can raise ******t in a room.

And use mylar blankets. If you don't have mylar, aluminum foil can work in a pinch, just wrap it around yourself under your clothes. Use a piece of scotch tape to hold it in place while getting dressed. You'd be surprised how much heat will be held in with just your torso and thighs wrapped.

Generators are great, but the level of how essential they are depends on where you live. If you live in a place that doesn't have cold winters, they're a lot less necessary. I'd argue most of texas probably considered themselves *not* a cold weather area before this.

I honestly never even considered a generator when I was doing our emergency supplies. Food, water, pet food, extra gasoline, batteries, ammo and flashlights.

Yeah I can see that as a major issue. But I assume most homes there have central air? If so, holy fuark how large of generator and how much gasoline that would take. I suppose buying a window unit to install in this sort of an emergency and sorting it with a small generator wouldn't be a bad idea.

my neighbors pipe busted above their garage and it was a legit waterfall. i'm dripping every faucet/spigot besides one which froze and it hasn't unfroze yet.

Honest question, but how often does this sort of weather event happen in Texas? Once every few years, once a decade??? It seems insane to me how people can be out of power so long in these conditions. Tragic.

I have a detached garage that gets cold as chit this time of year

One of the easiest ways I've found to heat it when I need to be out in it is a simple propane bottle for an outdoor gas grill and a turkey fryer, sans pot of course
Burns clean and warms a 30x50 room enough to function even when it's well below freezing

An actual propane heater made for outdoor home construction at Home Depot/Lowes etc of course would be better but if supplies are wiped out, you might find some kind of propane burning heat in the outdoor section with the gas grills
Not sure on the propane availability in TX but it seems every single gas station, Dollar General, Walmart in my area has 5gal propane tanks available for swap

My power is on and off about every 30min. Not enough time to do anything really. Water has been shut off from the city. With a new sheet of ice, can't really get out and get supplies (stores are out of power anyway too). Sucks.

Got power this AM 40 mins ago should cycle off after about 2 hours. I’m just worried about old pipes at my investment property but can’t do much about that right now.

3 more nights until Saturday boyos then things will start going back to normal
