The Stand on CBS All Access

The Stand has long been one of my favorite books, and I've always liked the 1994 mini-series, too.

That's why I was wary of this new series from the time I first heard about it. If the book is so good and they already made a hell of a good television adaptation, why are you remaking it? What are you going to bring to the table that improves upon the first series? Better actors than Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwold? A better script?

Anyway despite my misgivings, I wanted to like it so much and I wanted to give it a chance... but it's just not good.

Cons
They turned Larry Underwood into a black man and Ralph Brentner into a Native American woman. Nick basically doesn't exist when he should have equal importance to Stu until he dies. The guy playing Randall Flagg was ridiculously miscast and would have been better playing Glenn Bateman (nothing against the guy playing Glenn - he's fine). Whoopi Goldberg strangely plays Mother Abigail as though she were monotone and emotionless. The guy playing Lloyd is so ridiculous it hurts.

Furthermore, the writing just isn't good. It's almost like someone said: "Okay, everyone watch the 1994 miniseries, and makes sure we don't have a single similarity between that version and ours, even if it's the obvious thing we should be doing." It makes for very strange dialogue in places.

Pros
The guy playing Stu and the woman playing Nadine Cross both did a good job and were maybe the only two who were cast properly in their roles.

They spent some money on this thing, and it looks good.

Bottom Line
It's not terrible or anything, but it just doesn't live up the the greatness of The Stand.

Anybody else watching it? What did you think?

I couldn't tell if Lloyd was supposed to be like, comic relief.

Flagg was interesting. I had just wrapped up Big Little Lies where Skarsgård played an abuser with a breeding fetish, so that was weird.

Nadine was awesome, and agree about Stu. He even got the East Texas thing right. Overall I enjoyed it but it wasn't anything special.

Good to know I’m not missing much. I love the book, but wasn’t about to pay for ANOTHER streaming service just for this show.

Love the book and the old mini series. Was on the fence about getting CBS to watch this. Don’t think I’ll bother now

Loved the book and the 1994 miniseries was one of my favorite TV series ever and just reading your review is already pissing me off, so thanks for letting me know not to watch lol.

"Diversifying" the cast pisses me off.

Minimal Nick pisses me off.

Whoopi Goldberg pisses me off.

And agreed, you are not going to get a better cast than the 1994 one with Gary Senise and Rob Lowe and that guy who played RF in that one was awesome.



Between the massive disappointment in the Gunslinger and now this, maybe the studios should rethink putting their own creative interpretation on Stephen King's work. He's only the bestselling writer in the history of planet flat earth...maybe you should go with his material instead of having some snot nosed millennial try to change it up.

I was excited to see it as well. I watched about 3 episodes. It’s not terrible but nothing compared to the first series. I prob won’t be picking it back up.

In this case, I kept seeing his son Owen's name in the credits for "teleplay." I didn't look into it too much, but yeah, I think that may be who's responsible for the writing on this thing.

I know King himself oversaw the 1994 miniseries, so his son may have been trying to show what he can do here.

Did you read and then see the Gunslinger movie? You got a massive budget, you got a great story, you got Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey...and you somehow manage to completely change the story, make Jake the main character, jumble the entire timeline of the books to where its unrecognizable, and completely fuk that up.

No I heard about it, and that story featured a character called Randall Flagg, too right?

I just never read the books so I didn't watch.

Flagg was in the Dark Tower books. He was revealed to be more than just Randall Flagg.

I wouldn't watch it because there's no way they could have captured the sheer magnitude of The Dark Tower in one movie and The Gunslinger is not a stand alone.

Also King blew it by not trying to make Dark Tower movies when Clint Eastwood was a bit younger, as he is CLEARLY Roland Deschain.

Yeah the Dark Tower series ties the whole universe together, including Flagg and others from some of his other books. Its a great series. He goes by Walter in the Dark Tower series, but its the same guy as RF in The Stand and who he is and why he does what he does is explained.

I don't think you should change who the character is supposed to be.

This is sort of obvious when you bring things to the extreme.

Should you cast a rock/inanimate object as one of the characters?

Obviously no, because it's nothing like the character.

Imagine doing Brokeback Mountain, but casting a female in one of the main guy's roles.

Imagine casting a white person as Luke Cage. Would be fkin outrageous... As Luke Cage is a black man from Harlem and his whole personality is around that.

Stop fkin around with stories, let us have our stories and keep agendas out of it.

The book is one of my favorites, I've listened to the audiobook multiple times. I liked the original miniseries too.

I was expecting a lot from the new miniseries but will lower my expectations. I've been hearing similar things to OP from most fans of the original.

They start the movie out with Walter at the camp with the breakers and the kids shooting their mind blasts at the Tower. I was like WTF is this in the first 30 seconds of the movie.

I agree trying to capture the Dark Tower in under 2 hours is impossible and definitely what led to the movie sucking. The premise of the movie was basically Walter trying to capture Jake to make him a breaker and Roland trying to stop him and save Jake. Thats pretty much it.

That's disapponting drew. I love that book - read it three times. The '94 movie/miniseries was ok. But no one gets TrashCanMan right. Or really anything right. The Stand could be a billion dollar trilogy IMO they just need the right ppl to script it and spend some money on real actors. Stephen King may be a scumbag liberal but his stories are great - this one is his best after Stand by me. It deserves a real treatment.

Books and movies to me are purely entertainment.

I love King's books, especially earlier ones.

So I'd say every movie based on his book is an added bonus.

The Stand, was said from the start, was gonna be directed by George Romero and I've been looking forward to it.

However it hasn't. I really wish it had happened.
