I won't get into the ATG debate because I honestly don't know. Regular squats never did much for me in terms of growing legs. Front squats became my staple for building up my legs.

I'm sure others will chime in.

I always try to go ATG, not because I have to but because I want to.

I saw some pretty sweet quad improvements from moving from parallel to ATG when I was trying to get a really vertical back squat and focus on weightlifting. Felt like they might've been worse for glutes/hips tho (even though I've read they're supposed to involve more glutes).

Don’t give 2 fukks about going beyond parallel. For what? To recruit more glutes?

If you truly go deep (hamstrings make contact with calves) and lift for 405 for reps, you'll have developed quads. Most powerlifters who say ATG barely break para'. Weightlifters on the other hand, damson

I only go parallel tbfh

Edit:
Just watched video. If that’s ATG, then I also go ATG. I always thought ATG was literally just about scraping the floor

The squats in the vid are about halfway between parallel and true ATG.

Those are good squats but they aren't ATG. ATG would be going literally all the way down until your calves and hamstrings are touching and you can't go any deeper.

If you went truly ATG with just 135lbs for 12-15 rep sets your hams/glutes would likely get more work then 405 in that ROM range.

Could be broscience but I’ve heard that the deeper you squat the harder you train the lower quad near the knee

hip joint below the knees is what is important for transfer of force between muscle groups. Most people that go lower than that are just buttwinking

Great squats, but personally for myself, squats have been useless as far as building leg mass. Hack Squats have done way more for hypertrophy.

Unnecessary strain on knees has been debunked. Probably best to use as full a ROM as YOU can possibly go through to stimulate hypertrophy however, this will differ based on your individual morphology.

For example, if you can squat 405 to depth and have to sacrifice 90lbs in order to squat true ass to grass it could be argued that the higher load would likely stimulate more hypertrophy.

If squatting ass to grass beats the chit out of your lower back/knees/whatever/whatever whereas squatting to parallel doesn't seem to fatigue you half as much to the point where you can squat with a lot more volume throughout the week than maybe parallel is a better option in that case.

ATG squats are significantly better for you knees and they're not putting sheering forces on them. Most gym bros don't even do parallel squats in the first place.

Going ATG shifts the load onto the lower back and glutes.

I'd say try it but in general if you actually go ATG, you will be using less weight and you pretty much get the vast majority of quad recruitment going slightly below parallel anyways.

ATG is also something not everybody can do as they lack mobility (tho it can prob be developed in 90% of people) or their lower back rounds heavily.

For what it's worth Tom Platz used to do ATG squats and had the most developed quads of all time. He also did hack squats as well though.

Came in to say this, I know more people with tree trunk legs that use hacks/other machines compared to PLers that do the SBD routine.

Likely due to more focus directly into the target muscles and their rep schemes.

Most of the time if you see a big squatter you see someone with large hips/glutes and under developed quads. Not all the time, as there are some guys built for squatting. If quad development is the goal, there are much better exercises to choose from.
