You can probably be a half-assed doctor, it's gonna be very difficult to be a half-assed SEAL and ridiculously so to be a half-assed astronaut. The qualification process is too extreme.

I did not expect the episode to be so heavy. I had no clue about his rough beginnings. The part where he talks about the detective telling him that his father is dead, and he says he's relieved, jeez. What a badass mother he had.

How disappointing. It's unfathomable that anyone could say something so ignorant.

Same here. Only thing you hear people mention are his accomplishments. Hearing where he came from really opens your eyes.

Insane how humble he allows himself to be. I can't imagine being a SEAL and going back to college at a liberal institution and writing parking tickets. Definitely a reality check for myself- if he was okay going from seal life to going back to college and being in ROTC and writing parking tickets I think there are a lot of things I used to think I was too good for that I can go back and revisit. I appreciate that he shared how hard his years after returning stateside were. I can't imagine going from shooting guns and defending your brothers in hostile territory daily to student life and fatherhood. Also gotta shout out his wife who supported him through it all too- not too many are good enough to do so and be understanding.

So much this. If I'd been through even 15% of what he has I'd probably hate humanity and people.

Ive watched this 4 hour podcast twice in my spare time. Trying to pick up lessons and nuggets not only for myself but to pass to my children. His display of humility and love for service is incredible. So much to learn from this guy's perspective and mentality.

You are laying a complete false assumption about asian expectation here. Second and third world asian immigrants maybe, but respect is key to an old school asian family, especially coming from Korea or Japan.

You can be a half-assed doctor if you barely make it into a Caribbean medical school program and struggle to pass boards, but anyone getting into Harvard medical school has killed it every step of the way.

This is very true. Koreans are more about status and education. We know money can be made easily. What we admire is the hard work such as being a doctor.
