I know the ice storm you're talking about, but I've never heard '98 described as a 100-year event. Last I knew, it was on a list of 1-in-250 meteorological events. Some of those cities had never experienced anything like that at all.

Putting aside that Hydro-Quebec did make major investments in hardening the system after '98, ordinary winterization is not costly - taxpayers manage it fine all over the place - compared to trying to engineer for Montreal '98. Hopefully Texans will be pissed enough to reform the system against the interests of the people pocketing the difference, because that chit is a scam.

The best part about all of this was how it exposed covid when a real threat presented itself. Extended power loss with possible hypothermia? Go to a warmng center with 100's and 100's of other people crowded around to stay warm....

HEB was a damn warzone. Swung by at 10:30am after they opened and dairy/bread/water shelves were already empty, and the checkout line was 50 deep. I ended up abandoning my cart (all I had was peanut butter and eggs) and heading to shipley donuts lol

It's getting hard to find open gas stations, had to drive 20 mins till I found one.

I deal with the 100 year standard professionally, but on the design and construction side not insurance. My understanding is the Quebec storm was actually 5 or six separate weather events, so the classification was kind of all over the place. Fair point about the Texas grid, I am completely uneducated in it. I do have a colleague working as a manager in an electric cooperative outside San Antonio. They are still shut down as of yesterday, with the primary issue being downstream infrastructure damage but that might be a case for that specific mine/plant operation.

You can harden systems to a point but that kind of ice is a killer. Remember Hydro in Quebec particularly is a publicly owned utility, so the aftermath was political kryptonite. A lot of the 'improvements' were an advertising campaign about replacing vintage busted equipment with stuff built to a modern standard with cascade failure protection, so more towers can survive the line failure.

Sounds like a major improvement but its meeting code for the time. That plus some system interconnections and additional grid ties to the US so one tower collapse doesn't kill hundreds of thousands of lights. I can tell you that the same storm we had in '98 would produce the same results, you would just have some faster recovery times (which isn't nothing).

I'm good. Might get rounder from sitting in a hotel room watching home reno shows and eating too much junk. Don't have cable at home, so I usually can't watch them.

Found out this afternoon that my house still doesn't have power. Lucky that I could extend my reservation another night. Ready to not be living in a hotel room, but many many people are in much worse shape.

Pipes burst at my rental property. Had a bit of a rainstorm in both kitchens. Took some lulzy videos idk how to upload tho. Gonna be a pain to clean up and fix but I think I was generally pretty lucky srs.

walked 2 hours home from the grocery store. target was cleared the hell out

I know Fort Worth had water issues earlier this week but haven’t heard anything about the water being bad in Dallas. I assume Dallas area is ok? Been drinking it all week.
