Best way to learn a language?

I’m looking to learn Spanish cause I’ve spent a decent amount of time in Spanish speaking countries and have all the basic interactions a tourist would need, but I’m looking to expand that into being conversational. Are things like duo lingo any good? Can any misc polyglots weigh in and point me in the right direction? Muchas gracias hehe

No idea about apps, but I don't doubt there are really good ones out there.

My method might be outdated, but this is what I would do:

Learn the alphabet and start learning the basic words. You can set yourself weekly goals. I.E. Learning 50 words each week.
Once you have a good base, start reading in the language with one of those Spanish-English dictionaries.
If possible, find people to communicate with. Nothing beats learning a language like being surrounded by people who speak it.

You can try reading graphic novels or comics in Spanish. For example, when I was a kid, I practiced French by reading Asterix comic books in French and I had the English version as a backup.

I learnt english by playing gameboy pokemon games (srs). I remember being 8 or something and not having a clue about what i was doing, but slowly started putting two and two together with the help of the game's context. By the time i was playing pokemon Sapphire i knew pretty damn good English.


So maybe do that. Download some games in spanish or whatever language you want to learn and start playing. Once you can read and speak in another language, then you start practicing pronunciation

I can tell you what doesn't work. I tried to learn Mandarin on Rosetta Stone software and it sucked ass. Didn't learn more than a few dozen sentences.

What about just reading simple books in Spanish? Or does that seem like a waste.

I’ve heard Chinese languages take the longest to learn as a native engrish speaker

I started German on duolingo and have picked up the basics, the free version is worth a go if you can handle a few adverts.

There are also tutorials on YouTube to help with the bits you get confused on.

Get a Spanish speaking friend you can have text or spoken conversations with.

If you're willing to invest some money into it italki would probably be good. You schedule skype lessons with native speaking teachers for pretty cheap and then you could supplement that with apps/subtitle movies/reading chit/whatever between lessons.

Would definitely advise against this. You're really supposed to get newbie gainz in language learning as a kid, and then things get harder after you become an adult. Exposing yourself to media in Spanish is definitely a good idea, but it probably shouldn't be the core of your learning for a while. I also don't see any reason to delay pronunciation practice - it takes time to build it, and I don't think it slows down your ability to study otherwise.

The apps these days (duolingo, rosetta, memrise (memrise is probably actually my favorite)) are decent with getting you into the basics (survival phrases and conversational stuff) at least. Maybe my personal preference, but I'd like something like a textbook with more structure as a supplement. I don't find the apps great for grammar/patterns. They usually give you single examples rather than the full method of whatever you're trying to do.

If you really want the "best," that's going to courses with a good instructor and immersing yourself as much as possible (either live in the country that speaks the language, meet/hang with people that speak that language, or consume media in that language + hang on that language's misc/chat roulette). To be practical though, I'd search google for some textbooks and check them out, probably buy one, then use that in tandem with an app + media appropriate for your level. Would def recommend a teacher/tutor if it's convenient/affordable.

Paid for the complete version with unlimited languages.

**** moves so slow and there's zero breakdown on any of the grammar.

I'm reassessing now and looking for a book to supplement it with.
