Into the Looking Glass and it's three sequels - military sci fi by John Ringo. Like all his books these are heavy on the conservative politics, huge guns, nasty aliens and detailed military action. The first book is focused on ground combat but the next three pivot to space naval combat. Not his best series (that would be his "March" books) but still very fun. Unfortunately book 4 left things very open for the series to continue and came out in 2008, so I think this one ends on a cliffhanger.
John Ringo has some pretty good books. Have you read his Troy Rising series? His Kildaire series is kind of strange. Pretty much the first book is porn and guns. The porn settles down some in later books and it is more gun and action focused.

Can't believe how long I've been away from this thread. 7 pages in the new years version already.

Been reading The Last Kingdom series. About 70% through book 2. Quite like them, but it's always a dilemma for me. I like to complete a series when I have started, but with so many I'm not sure I will. Then if I stop I don't know if I'll ever come back to it.

Want to read Norse Mythology some time soon.

Also been watching Black Sails, so maybe some pirate books, if there are any decent ones.

as far as 'sales technique' goes it's very basic and not very deep


sales psychology wise it's not bad -- breaks buyers and people in general into 4 different categories (fighters, entertainers, detectives and counselors)


i'd give it a 5/10 (ded fkn Srs)

I won't add this in my list, but I just finished a short 230 page (semi-large type) $0.99 paperback that I bought used entitled Soldier Boys by Dean Hughes. It's a book for young adults, and I read it to see if would be something a relative of mine might like. And if you know of any middle school age or older students who might like a WWII story, this was a decent book about two youths (one American, one German) who desperately want "in the action," and each get their wish. Coincidentally, they end up on opposite ends of a 400 yard field with woods on each side. One attacking then retreating; then the other attacking then retreating.

Edit: I just started a re-read of For Whom The Bell Tolls. WOW!!! It's like Indiana Jones meets The Red Badge Of Courage in Spain

A little more escapism reading this month. I'm 99% done with the certification course I am pursuing, so I plan to read some more serious books once I'm not saving all my good brain energy for studies.

13 A Little Hatred - This is the first book in Joe Abercrombie's new trilogy following his "First Law" series. I loved the First Law books. This was good but not quite up to the standard of the first trilogy. I think some of that is because he spent a lot of time resetting the game board for the new direction this trilogy is going to move in.

However, still really good if you like Dark Fantasy or Joe's writing, and apparently the second book was a huge improvement (third isn't out yet). I placed a hold for #2.

14 Gun Runner - Larry Correia's new book is about a group of gun running mercenaries who get tangled up with a violent warlord on a hostile alien world. The planet is important because the chemical that allows for interstellar travel only grows there, but it's dangerous because of the giant creatures that live on the surface. So, basically DUNE but instead of knives and voice boxes for weapons there are giant mechs with rail cannons. Big, dumb fun.

15 Money: The True History of a Made Up Thing - An exploration of the history of money written by one of the main guy's behind the "Planet Money" podcast. Picked this up randomly from the new releases display at my library since I've listened to their podcast and enjoyed it. I learned quite a bit from this book.

Kindle won't read epub files but you can convert them to mobi files which it can. Use the program Caliber, it's free.

5. Six Wives - The Queens of Henry VIII -David Starkey

Took almost a month to get through this book. Very detailed and informative, but also a heavy read and a massive book. Starkey moves at quite a pace and it's tough cookie if you can't keep up. Quite a different historical writer to someone younger like Dan Jones.

Currently reading a very short book and hope to finish it by month's end tomorrow. So, whilst it's a bit premature

A story about time traveling through a portal back to 1958 (5 years early) to save JFK from assassination but not without consequences (butterfly effect). Great story, if not a little long, that is a page turner and easy to follow.

Wrapped up The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fun, relaxing and creates a sense of wonder from the intergalactic fantasy world, plus Elon Musk likes it.

A bit behind on my goal but planning to hit some books hard over the weekend by the pool because its supposed to be gorgeous. Tan and development gains boyos.

Glad you loved it brah! Definitely one of my favorites. In case you haven't seen yet it's the first book of a trilogy so check out the other two. Larry has been promising a second trilogy in that world for years now, fingers crossed. There are also two short stories in the same universe that are audible exclusives - "Murder on the Orient Elite" which is a train based whodunit, and "Tokyo Raider" which sees Sullivan's son recruited to pilot a magically powered mecha to battle a Godzilla sized soviet Summoned thru the streets of Tokyo. Bronson was back for the narration on both.

Work that tan boyo.

No Longer Human – Osamu Dazai - 3/10

Short story about a Japanese kid living a remorseless and meaningless existence in Tokyo. There really isn't much to this story. The antagonist is basically a mute for most of the story and is mostly disconnected from the rest of society. I thought this would be a lot more interesting from all the good reviews I saw and I'm puzzled to why anyone would actually like this. The only good thing about this book is that it was short read, so now I can go read something else instead.

I don't know if Weber served in the Military or just researches the heck out of his stories but he's one of "the" guys for military sci-fi. Very realistic portrayal of military life/tactics etc.

I haven't read the honor books yet but hope to someday soon.

Thanks, I'll do that! Your recommendations never fail, especially on this genre.

Honor series seems promising to a reader like me, who love the scenes where a woman kicks men's as.....*ahem* posteriors. (like in "GI Jane")
