80's had the GOATs and set the standard, but I personally like the 90's. Slasher films are my favorite. Friends go to X location, drink, fuk, and slowly start dying. Friday the 13th obviously is basically the standard in that and is 80's, but the 90's seemingly every film was similar.

Now everything is ghost/spirits which I think is stupid.

This. Part of the reason was that the 80s could always do the whole "phone is dead" meme. Now it's increasingly more contrived. Everyone is 5 s away from recording and calling the police, so most plot lines of older horror stories can't even work these days.

I suppose they can still do a whole "lost in the woods with no phone" kind of story.

Cell phones and then smart phones, widespread gps, etc kind of ruined the horror genre.

Practical effects were at their peak too. 90s and especially 00s used CGI which eliminated the realism. Even cheap practical effects are far more scary than the most expensive CGI. The reason is CGI doesn’t give the viewer a sense of tangibility. The brain sees it as almost a cartoon and not an entity in the real world that can physically be felt.

Frankly, this speaks to how bad movies are today. Having the phone handy should provide a new sense of horror...help is 5 minutes away, but the killer is breaking through the door now!

Halloween H2O had a variation with the nurse at the window trying to get the cops' attention outside. Or Nightmare on Elm Street when Nancy is screaming to the cop outside the front door. Cell phones today should accomplish the same tension and sense of urgency.

2020 was more horrifying than any other decade!

But I'd have to say the 80's. It was the perfect mix of trying to be scary, while people also having low expectations of what they were watching. Bad acting and unrealistic death scenes seem perfectly acceptable when watching an 80's horror movie.
