ITT we icemaxxxx

After many cocktails, I’m now in the quest for perfect clear ice. I’m achieving some pretty impressive results. Bought this kit from Amazon. Best results, distilled water and then regular tap boiled.

Why go through this?

Slower melting ice srs. Cleaner tasting cubes, no impurities.

My main reason, aesthetics. Can’t go back now boyos

I boil it then let it cool down a bit. Apparently boiled water holds less dissolved “gasses” and impurities. Also it’s directional freezing, so impurities and minerals travel down the little holes as the top freezes, leaving the clear, more “pure”crystals up top.

Someone much smarter than me wrote this explanation.
Solubility of gas in liquid not only depends on temperature, it is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas. When boiling, the gas phase in contact with the water is no longer the air, but the water vapor (in the bubbles and close to the surface). In those bubbles the partial pressure of the gases will be close to zero, so gas molecules will still leave the liquid phase (and the increased surface area and the movement of the water speeds up the process), but hardly any will return. Given sufficient time, the water vapor will remove most of the gas. Boiling is basically the equivalent of degassing by purging: removing a gas (oxygen usually) from a solvent by bubbling an inert gas through it.

impressive results brah.

I used to do the igloo cooler method to make clear blocks but it was too much of a bich to carve and have the cubes ready for every drink. Might have to invest in one of those kits tho

Just looking at the videos, the cutting, everything wet, and the space the coolers take was a big nope for me. I make 4 cubes a day. Keep the cubes in large ziploc bags for storage.

I have about 80 cubes ready to go in ziplocks.

You need to be able to insulate the water to let it freeze from the top. The gray side of my kit is like a little cooler with two silicone pieces.

OP since you're an ice expert, maybe you can answer a strange phenomenon I've heard. Does hot water freeze faster than regular/cold water? Have you paid any attention to this since you are frequently boiling and freezing water?

I believe it to be true, and I could ask google. But I'd rather ask you.

Apparently it freezes faster but what I have noticed is: “warm” or slightly higher than room temps yield bigger and clearer cubes. Hotter temps create a bit faster freeze but it shrinks a little, maybe 5-7% shrinkage by volume. Any physics brahs could chime in.

Yes I can confirm, it must have something to do with energy exchange, I guess hotter water loses “hot” energy at a faster rate so it crystallizes faster? Not sure, however any time differences is null because I just set it, and check after 16 hrs or something or when I get back from work. I don’t like losing cube volume to higher temps so I do warm water that’s been boiled.

Fun fact, I tried cold bottled, got clear cubes with a million little clear bubbles so there is something to be said about the higher temps and allowing the gassses to escape.
