Anyone else lift completely raw? B

It's been two weeks worth now and I enjoy the new challange. I've realised how weak I actually am without knee sleeves / belt. My close grip bench press hasn't taken that much of a hit but my deadlift and especially squat has. I'm talking like 60lbs worth.

What I have noticed though is that my core has DOMS for once and I can do the 'stomach vaccum' now which I couldn't before which makes me wonder.. They say that using a belt helps core activation more so than without ? Anyone else experience something similar to myself ?

Can confirm I would lose 60 lb. on squat or deadlift if I took off my belt. Do you do direct core work? If you do, I'm surprised you got doms.

It's moreso a testament to someone's ability to utilize their equipment correctly, than it is about their core being weak. I can rep 45 lb. weighted decline sit ups for sets of 12-15 easily, my core isn't weak. Just stronger with the belt.

Dead is the primary lift to have a belt for.

No, for bench. I used to, didn't gain anything from it personally. But some people swear by it.

No I never train it bro. I just started yesterday (captain's chair or what ever you call it)

The real reason why I'm training "raw" is because my pro show is cancelled here in New Zealand and if I want to remain "pro" I have to pay a membership (f that) - also cbf competing powerlifting or strongman so I decided to just lift "raw" since I'm not competing and man.. My front squat is like 265lbs for 5 and conventional is 440lbs for 5. Unlike yourself, I realised that I've used the sleeves and belt as a crutch. I have to really watch what I do when I squat otherwise I'll face snap city. I could be wrong obviously.. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying training a lot now, it's a new goal, but man.. It really makes you think huh.. Like, CAN you actually lift 495 for reps ? Or do you need your belt.

BTW I'm not taking anything away from anyone and I'm not looking down at anyone, I'm just saying these things help a sh!ttonne (for my atleast)

Agreed completely. Always humbled how much weaker I am without belt and sleeves on squat. Scared to work out with more than like 365 when 100% raw, and I can PR in the upper 400's (with the gear on). I tend to squat differently too, focus on deep reps, higher bar position, etc. Just feels different with no belt. More like BB'ing than strength trianing.

I did smolov squat cycle once, which is supposed to be done using your BELTED max, but without a belt. Fking never again.

In terms of "snap city" - I can live without a belt, my form is good enough that I don't feel anything in the joints if you get what I mean. The only exception to this is my knees aren't the greatest. Without sleeves I really focus on my form and slow the decent down hence the big hit with my squats. I've also stopped using things like oly shoes (I can hit atg NO problem without them so why use it)

To the fulla who says they wanna use wrist wraps for heavy DB's, why not just lift at a lighter intensity and hit a rep range that gets you close to proxmity of failure ? Even wrist wraps aren't guaranteed. My 2 cents

Have always lifted completely raw with the exception of wraps for a few months after an injury and straps for some pulling exercises. My first belt is in the mail, what should I expect?

Stopped wearing a belt in college because our strength trainer wouldn’t let us. Really does make sense to do it naturally tbh. You just have to be careful and have good form. I do wonder what I could have squatted and deadlifted with a belt though

Deadlift completely raw. Have pulled 660 when I was under 200 bw without belt/straps and with a belt I pull less due to not being used to it

Wait so people actually lift with equipment? I assume that 95% of people lift "completely raw" except the pros and the weirdos

If its a real powerlifting style belt, be prepared for some bruising until it gets broken in (srs)

Don't, don't do that.

That would have you ranked #330 in the entire world at the 198 weight class for deadlift, without even wearing a belt.

Relax, my cousin hit a 700lb bench when he was 14, not that big of a deal. Didn't record it since it was so weak

I use the belt off and on but prefer lifting with it. Also just bought some sleeves after not using them for 10 years. I like them. I'm not sure if they add any strength but they make my technique feel really locked in.

Lol at the non avi's always getting rustled. Chill.

IMO sleeves to help. I'm not sure why people always say they don't do much. If that's the case, why even waste time putting them on ?

100% raw crew. No belt, no straps just my own body.

160kg Squat for reps belt less, not collosal by any means but I'm pretty happy with it.

I genuinely believe your weaker parts such as grip failing are pre indicators you aren't ready to handle progression. Ignore them at your peril and it's the more important parts of your body that are likely to suffer.
