That's false. Covid and influenza are not spread exactly the same way. The study I linked pretty much establishes that. We know these are two different viruses that have different etiologies and presentations. For example, flu generally only affects the upper respiratory system whereas covid affects the entire respiratory system. This can affect which kind of aerosols ejected viral material is more likely to be present in, giving different results for something like a surgical mask. You can see that while the masks aren't great at stopping flu aerosols, they work quite well against covid aerosols.

A study of 3363 individuals isn't large enough for you? Assuming the surgical masks did not affect the virus copies per sample of aerosoled particles, you would expect to see these results 1/50 times. There are other studies on the efficacy of masks as well for covid transmission.
