Pigpocalypse in GA: Veteran pig hunting trip pics

One of us idiots decided to get married. Whoops. Anyway, might as well make a party out of it. We decided to go pig hunting in GA. They have a big time pig problem down there...feral hogs cause millions of dollars of damage every year. They're an invasive species. They're eager for people to come and eradicate them. And hunting them is a ****ing blast. Plus they're kind of delicious.

Starts around sundown. Cruise around in a van equipped with a thermal camera. We drove around different corn fields until we would find a big herd of pigs.

Once you find them you dismount. Everyone has a rifle with a thermal scope...most of us were running 7.62x39 AR15 style rifles since the ammo is a little cheaper and penetrates thick skin better than 5.56.

Everyone comes on line, we line up targets according to a predesignated order, then count down from 4. At the last count, everyone opens fire and the pigs scatter. We were able to drop one each in the opening volley, and hit a bunch of others on the run. Some of the pigs were hit 8 or 9 times lol...they're very tough animals.

17 pigs down, processing them was a pain in the ass but we walked away with around 250 pounds of meat. Bunch of happy farmers too. It's very lean for pork so not ideal for cooking on its own, but it's good to mix with venison or elk for burgers and things like that.

The AR isn't some high powered round or anything. 223/5.56 is varmint gun status.

Honestly, can't blame him for thinking that Ars were super powerful based on how they are portrayed by the media.

Never hunted/exterminated pigs... I could see 5.56 being a bit light for the big ones, but those in the op look like young ones.

Haha bro my whole life hunting, I was taught to use the right bullet for the job and ensure ethical shot placement for a minimum of suffering.

...then you get to pig hunting, and you're spraying these ****ing things with Wolf "hollowpoint" (basically full metal jacket), taking shots at animals on the run, dead checking them with a mag dump to the face, etc.

It's def different.

Unlike night vision the technology is actually getting cheaper and more accessible. We were using Halo LRs which are around $6-7k. The cheapest you can get into a "real" thermal scope is probably $2-3k. The entry level units are the Flir PTS223, Bering Hogster, and Pulsar Trails.

The tenderloin is good. The consistency in the shoulder and leg can get gummy with the thickness of the tendons especially if you grind it. I've had luck mixing it with venison or beef

I'd legit consider flying to America to shoot hogs from a helicopter and get paid for that

I've heard about this before. Aren't they a little dangerous also? The reason farmers like hunting parties like yours is to lessen the risk to them?

As far as I know for most animals in most states, all you need is a nonresident license.

For pigs, pretty sure they want them dead by any means, so if Canadians want to kill them, get permission on someone's land and have at it.

Someone confirm?

Not night fishing in Ontario. Totally legal. Is bc different?
