The "gritty movie" was the cliche of the 2010s
Just like the 70s has westerns and the 80s had ultra-gory action movies the "gritty movie" was the cliche movie of the 2010s.
Elements include:
- A storyline with no attempts at humor
- gray color palette
- takes itself way too seriously
- Attempts to take an unreal concept and anchor it in reality
Examples include:
- Virtually all Christopher Nolan movies
- New Robocop
- Daniel Craig Bond movies
- Jason Bourne movies
- Dredd
- No Country For Old Men
- There Will be Blood
- The Road
- Most Jake Gylenhall movies from that time period.
It also explains why the DC extended universe sucks so bad - they're trying to use a genre that's 10 years out of style.

yeah it's really more like 2005-2015. I'd say Nolan's gritty streak ended with Interstellar.Most of those were mid 2000s before 2010.
