It has recently come to my attention that many Asians in America feel attacked and marginalized. In an effort to check my privilege, I have brushed up on my Asian geography and have begun to fight back against the systemic racism that is endemic in our society.

He was referring to the area, not the people. Referring to countries and geographical features as oriental has never been considered "offensive". The word also literally just means Eastern.

I wouldn't risk it in 2021 srs. To me, Oriental shouldn't be offensive either. I had old timer teachers who used it in my youth with no disparaging intent.
