ITT I aware you on one of the most Alpha novels ever written
Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_Meridian
basically the ultimate western (i haven't read Lonesome Dove)
it's about a real gang of scalphuntes (the Glanton Gang) that lived during the 19th century, bloody, brutal and beautifully written, not for the faint of heart but i think it's a book everyone should read at least once in their lives to understand human nature and how rough things were back in the day and by back in the day i mean not actually that long ago
i've picked out some excerpts below to share with my misc brahs

All night sheetlightning quaked sourceless to the west beyond the midnight thunder-heads, making a bluish day of the distant desert, the mountains on the sudden skyline stark and black and livid like a land of some other order out there whose true geology was not stone but fear.

They walked on into the dark and they slept like dogs in the sand and had been sleeping so when something black flapped up out of the night ground and perched on Sproule's chest. Fine fingerbones stayed the leather wings with which it steadied as it walked upon him. A wrinkled pug face, small and vicious, bare lips crimped in a horrible smile and teeth pale blue in the starlight. It leaned to him. It crafted in his neck two narrow grooves and folding its wings over him it began to drink his blood.

He looked at them. They were foul and ragged and half crazed. They'd been making forays at night up the arroyo for wood and water and they had been feeding off a dead mule that lay gutted and stinking in the far corner of the yard. The first thing they asked for was whiskey and the next was tobacco.
You've done this afore, said Tobin.
The kid wiped his nose with a swipe of his greasy sleeve and turned the piece in his lap. Not me, he said.
Well you've the knack. More so than me. There's little equity in the Lord's gifts.
The kid looked up at him and then bent to his work again.
That's so, said the expriest. Look around you. Study the judge.
I done studied him.
Mayhaps he aint to your liking, fair enough. But the man's a hand at anything. I've never seen him turn to a task but what he didnt prove clever at it.
The lad drove the greased thread through the leather and hauled it taut.
He speaks dutch, said the expriest.
Dutch?
Aye.
The kid looked at the expriest, he bent to his mending.
He does for I heard him do it. We cut a parcel of crazy pilgrims down off the Llano and the old man in the lead of them he spoke right up in dutch like we were all of us in dutchland and the judge give him right back. Glanton come near fallin off his horse. We none of us knew him to speak it. Asked where he'd learned it you know what he said?
What did he say.
Said off a dutchman.

they saw one day a pack of viciouslooking humans mounted on unshod indian ponies riding half drunk through the streets, bearded, barbarous, clad in the skins of animals stitched up with thews and armed with weapons of every description, revolvers of enormous weight and bowieknives the size of claymores and short twobarreled rifles with bores you could stick your thumbs in and the trappings of their horses fashioned out of human skin and their bridles woven up from human hair and decorated with human teeth and the riders wearing scapulars or necklaces of dried and blackened human ears and the horses rawlooking and wild in the eye and their teeth bared like feral dogs and riding also in the company a number of halfnaked savages reeling in the saddle, dangerous, filthy, brutal, the whole like a visitation from some heathen land where they and others like them fed on human flesh.

Young blasarius, yonder.
A favourite book.
Is it alpha though? The outlaws behave in the most morally unhinged, degenerate manner. You admire the Judge for his intelligence, yet turn your eyes in revulsion at the sight of his brutality.
Maybe it's the setting -- the emptiness of life spent in the saddle in perpetual flight from the ghosts of your worst actions.

“A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or cranefeathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeontailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust and many with their braids spliced up with the hair of other beasts until they trailed upon the ground and their horses' ears and tails worked with bits of brightly colored cloth and one whose horse's whole head was painted crimson red and all the horsemen's faces gaudy and grotesque with daubings like a company of mounted clowns, death hilarious, all howling in a barbarous tongue and riding down upon them like a horde from a hell more horrible yet than the brimstone land of Christian reckoning, screeching and yammering and clothed in smoke like those vaporous beings in regions beyond right knowing where the eye wanders and the lip jerks and drools.”
“All other trades are contained in that of war.
Is that why war endures?
No. It endures because young men love it and old men love it in them. Those that fought, those that did not.
That's your notion.
The judge smiled. Men are born for games. Nothing else. Every child knows that play is nobler than work. He knows too that the worth or merit of a game is not inherent in the game itself but rather in the value of that which is put at hazard. Games of chance require a wager to have meaning at all. Games of sport involve the skill and strength of the opponents and the humiliation of defeat and the pride of victory are in themselves sufficient stake because they inhere in the worth of the principals and define them. But trial of chance or trial of worth all games aspire to the condition of war for here that which is wagered swallows up game, player, all.”

Not mirin the flowery language and overuse of similes in a hard as nails Western. Detracts from the experience imo.

Spoiler!
for example when they start out they are just bounty hunters but eventually descend into absolute degeneracy and murder for enjoyment, this really speaks to people's inability to control themselves especially when you get a little taste of something you might enjoy, we can see plenty of that mirrored in some sense in the degeneracy of the modern world
re the judge
Spoiler!
he's absolutely fookin terrifying, i was convinced he would be revealed as a demon or something by the end of the book, definitely one of the great villains of all time, i loved his quote about wanting to control nature and the little sketchbook he carries around with him
The judge wrote on and then he folded the ledger shut and laid it to one side and pressed his hands together and passed them down over his nose and mouth and placed them palm down on his knees.
Whatever exists, he said. Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.
He looked about at the dark forest in which they were bivouacked. He nodded toward the specimens he'd collected. These anonymous creatures, he said, may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth.

Couldn't stand it or get threw it. I hate his style and use of words. Plus you can 20 pages of him describing the desert scene with the flowers, bushes, sky and mountains with nothing happening. It's like pulling teeth.

The judge is, I suspect, some supernatural entity. His physical appearance as a naked, pale, fat man belies his evil spirit and the depths of his great cruelty. His position -- as a judge, even invites some comparisons to a deity. He is the one who passes the sentence on to the condemned.
The passage you've identified further elicits that comparison of the Judge as a god. Maybe not an all-knowing divine entity, but certainly one with an interest in knowing all of nature's secrets. I like to think of him as some ancient forgotten god who exists unbothered by the trivialities of the human condition. Towards the end of the book, the Judge's appearance turns even more otherworldly.

His actions, his knowledge, his lack of compassion, empathy -- these all make him something altogether different from humanity.

Came in expecting chit recommendation, leaving surprised.
Blood Meridian is probably the best book I’ve ever read, and I have read A LOT of books, including virtually every ‘classic’ novel and then some. McCarthy created an absolute masterpiece with this.

The Poisonwood Bible
First chapter from the mother’s perspective is very “flowery prose” and might turn people off, but the rest of the book isn’t like that at all. If you know me, you know I am not a fan of sloots, so a book told from the perspective of 4 young girls has to be really damn good for me to get into it. It’s beautiful srs.

also to add, from all of McCarthy's works Outer Dark is very very underrated, i would rate it perhaps just below Blood Meridian for anyone that enjoys his writing, he wrote it in his earlier years and it's one of the best books i've ever read srs

tries to write like Henry James imo.
That said I like the landscapes and stories of the founding of the West. Same period in england try Thomas Hardy, writes about the lives of the ordinary people not Jane Austen tea parties.
You were probably forced to read Tess of the d'Urbervilles at school which is a shame since it probably puts everyone off Hardy for life.

I also didn’t mind the constant barrage of whale facts cause I enjoy trivia and just knowing stuff like that, but I also appreciated the 1001 biblical references and the way he uses ships/the ocean/whales to talk about life. The chapter ‘a squeeze of the hand’ always cheers me up and makes me feel like there’s still a reason to be kind to other people in the world. Great book but I realize it definitely isn’t for everyone.have you read moby-dick? it's the only book i'd put above blood meridian, planning to make a separate post about it, it gave me a greater sense of awe and literally gave me goosebumps on multiple occasions, just too beautifully composed, i know its a very encyclopaedic for some but i love learning new things and the insights and depth melville gets into, along with his humour and the epicness of the tale, man i fukin loved it

I've read and listened to this novel; just reading it does not do it justice srs. Some of the prose read aloud is literal poetry. Didn't think the judge would stick with me but that dude was a villain.
edit: I wouldn't say it's the best novel I've ever read

I need to retry Blood Meridian. I started it a year or so ago and quit after like 20% for some reason.
