Don’t be a try-hard at work

If you actually don’t give a fuk about being perfect, and are instead just nice to people and manage their expectations of you, work is a lot easier. Also the job still gets done.

Just thought I’d share my experience as a manager. Not sure if anyone else wants to offer their 2 cents.

And it's not about trying hard. Its about meeting your specified goals laid out by the product manager within a schedule.

This. Letting your work “speak for itself” very rarely works. The 6’4” guy with social skills will pass you up every time.

That's absolutely BS. Asking questions is a huge part of product development. That guy would be outed so quickly when his answers get put to the test, which is going to happen.

Social skills regarding the work itself, is not important. But in a socializing setting it is.

My department’s productivity has been the best in our region since I started and we do great work.

Maybe you missed my point or I didn’t articulate it well enough. My point is that you don’t need to overdo it. Delegating and being nice to people takes work off your table. Being a try-hard doesn’t curry any favors.

Absolutely. I’m quiet, decent looking, semi-fit, and 6’5”.

Everyone assumes I’m competent on looks alone.

Had a Teams meeting earlier and didn’t say more than 2 words, but no one questions it lol

Come in early, leave late, go above and beyond, at first you'll be appreciated but then it will be expected of you. Then one day you don't get it done, don't go above and beyond, and it will be held against you. Get the reputation as the go to guy, they are going to go to you, with all that bullzit.

Repped bro you get it. There’s a lot of talk about managing your subordinates but managing your supervisor(s) also is important.

Also, you can’t not work. The work is still there. It’s just how you go about it that makes a difference. I dunno, I’m not an expert. Just my experience

You know, that’s another one. You gotta figure out a look for yourself that makes people happy to see you. It’s easier if you’re naturally attractive.

I’ve found these to be the case:

1. Have a decent haircut

2. Wear decent clothes

3. Don’t smell bad

If youre having to tell them not to do extra, maybe thats why youre only best in region, and not nationwide, bb.

That doesn’t work. People don’t respect a yes-man, and less-agreeable people actually tend to exceed in the dominance hierarchy.

Also, having the ability to work well and in a friendly and respectful manner with your subordinates, coworkers, and supervisors only leads to smooth sailing.

Like, seriously...treating the people around you in a respectful manner goes a long way.

I suppose it’s kind of a dichotomy. But you can respectfully disagree with your boss and respectfully tell someone that they need to do a better job

6'5 is a great height if you play basketball. But its completely useless in the corporate and dating world.
